My 1st was 5 hours and back to back so not too bad, my second was less about 40 min from arriving at hospital at 5cm to having lo, less than 15 min after her checking lo was on his way. We are discussing number three but im terrified I won't get to hospital on time anyone had such a fast labour and then had another baby? Was it faster? Would a home birth be safer?

I'm having my 3rd too and little worried about how quick it could be. My midwife works away and is only off from the day before my due date. So bit worried she might not make it back in time! I'm having a homebirth. Had one with my second. Discuss it with your midwife. Might be a good idea to consider a homebirth and make you less stressed and take the worry away about not getting to the hospital in time? Xxx

I'd be tempted to go for a home birth, or at least discuss it with your mw! I just posted this on another thread, but I got told after my 2nd that any more would be a planne homebrth with members of the family trained up for emergencies! My 2nd was about an hour in total, started with me thinking I was having bh, then they started to hurt so I went for a bath, got straight out the bath and she was born 3 mins later delivered by my mum with my dad on the phone to the ambulance

I thought about a home birth with my second but I found the concept scary, I had contractions start at 6am I think but I kept expecting them to stop they carried on through the day so I did get warning iykwim. I'm terrified of that happening to me next time it must have been scary, we haven't started trying yet because I'm so afraid, I know my mw will suggest a home birth but they are based just as far away as the hospital.

Why not read up on home birth and set your fears aside? There's loads of groups on fb etc! I'm hoping leaving a big gap between them will make for a bit longer labour next time!

Wow. I didn't have a particularly quick labour, but I did have a planned home birth, so I thought I'd share. I started with mild pains at 4.30am but I thought they were just pre-labour pains for most of the day. We went out for a walk and came home at about 4pm when it seemed that they were getting stronger and closer together. Called MW at 6.30pm who said to wait until I couldn't bear the pain before ringing her to come to our house. Finally called her at 8pm and she took about half an hour to arrive. She checked me at 9pm and I was 10cm dilated and ready to push!!! Still took me two hours to push her out, but I had a wonderful home birth experience and would do it again in a heartbeat. It was amazing - no pain relief whatsoever either and it was manageable.

Definitely consider it - we live down a narrow country lane that's about 25mins from hospital and it was OK. I am a bit kamikaze about things, so maybe it's not for everyone, though. I'm hoping no.2 goes as well when it comes along! x

Thanks I did my first with lots of gas and air but with my second I hardly touched it, I'll look up on home births I really wanted a water birth but she only managed to get the pool half full when he was born.

Hiya. Homebirth may be a good option for you.
Have a look at homebirth.org for info and see if you have a homebirth support group near you, these are good to go to, to air your fears. Good luck.

I'm thread stalking!! My labour with number 1 was 5 hours start to finish and as mw stitched me up she said I would be a perfect candidate for a home birth next time. Obviously while someone is stitching your foof up you swear there will never be a next time, but we are going to TTC later this year and I am in two minds. Wanted a water birth as someone was already in it when I got to hospital so couldn't use it, and at home I would have that option, but quite frankly I'm not sure I could deal with all the prep and the mess! And are second births always quicker and easier?

My first came within 50 mins after induction so was worried the second would be quick! Labour started on its own second time and the snotty midwife said I needed to go home cos I was only 1cm! Granted my labour was 9 hours from start to finish but didn't make it back to hospital! Evie was delivered on my bed by paramedics :) best experience of my life :)

I'm planning a home birth this time cos my first was less than 6 hours from nothing to my daughter being born. I'm actually hoping it won't be too quick cos my Mum is 2 hours away and it could all be over before she arrives and my childcare options without her are limited. But I figure worst case scenario I'd rather have my daughter at home with me, than dragging her to hospital as I'm delivering a baby!

I'm hoping for a water birth at home. You can buy pools cheaply on ebay (under £50) and if you get one with liners then you can sell it on again afterwards. My midwife suggested I get one with an immersable pump cos it's a nightmare emptying them afterwards apparently. I'm also going to get some plastic sheets, mattress protectors and cheap sheets for the bed in case the pool doesn't work out, on advice from another forum I use which has a home birth sticky on it.

I actually can't wait for labour! I know, I'm mad lol! But I really love the idea of labouring and giving birth at home and will be gutted now if it doesn't happen for any reason. My midwife described it as "You give me a call when you go into labour, and I come round. Then we chill out til the baby arrives". Love it! :)

(P.s. I know I won't be chilling out, exactly, but I like the idea of trying to!)

Do they leave you on your own until 4cm like the hospitals tend to send you home. I went from 5cm to holding baby in minutes so scared she will leave and then I'll have baby also past time I had maconium in the waters (not the dangerous kind, whatever that means) would I be transferred in labour if that happens again?

Aww. This sounds lovely - just like the home birth I had. I didn't give birth in the water in the end, because it really slowed my contractions down, even though it was really pleasant being in the pool. We got a Made in Water pool and yes, get a submersible pump to empty it. They are very cheap. I just got one from eBay. I ended up giving birth crouched on the floor next to the pool. I had some of those disposable mattress protector pad things, some foam poufs and lots of cheap dark coloured towels. Make sure you've got something warm, like a duvet, to cover yourself and LO with afterwards if you plan on immediate skin-to-skin and to BF. My midwives were amazing - we had loads of fun chatting in between contractions/pushes. I think I went a bit crazy towards the end, but I loved the whole experience. PM me if you wanna chat about home birth. Good luck :) xx

It's one of those things that the midwife will play by ear. I rang mine up and she said to ring her back when I felt like I couldn't cope with the pain any more, then it would take her half an hour to get to me. When she arrived after I rang her back, she examined me and I was already 10cm and ready to push. She had to call the second midwife to come immediately and it was all a bit of a mad rush after that, though it still took LO two hours to arrive. x
