Questions about epidurals

I had one before the induction drip started. I had contractions without with gas and air which takes the edge off but I honestly take my hat off to anyone who labours without an epi. Went in first time just felt the bee sting local and nothing else. It was so good after a top up I barely felt her head or my small tear. I didn't even feel the suturing and the mw didnt even need to use local for that. I could move my legs and lift my bum off the bed.

Hi I did have a bad experience with one for my first, I don't want to scare anyone but it took a long time to get better and a lot of trauma. I'm not allowed one ever again. I did manage to have my daughter without one and had pitocin? drip so was very painful but I managed xx

Is there a set time your kept in for after having one? X

I dont think so - i was being kept in anyway, but i would imagine it would still just be the standard 4 hours-ish, should give you plenty of time to stop being wobbly.

Hi Ladies, just reading through. Did you have to have a catheter? I have had 3 children without epidural as the one thing that put me off was the though of a catheter.

I did, and beforehand it wasnt a thought that filled me with joy, but it wasnt bad at all. Obviously you cant feel anything, and the midwife just popped one in a few times to empty my bladder, rather than leaving it in. It was all very business like, lol, and at the time didnt feel odd or embarrassing. Beforehand it had all sounded rather mortifying.

I've never had a catheter with an epi, the only time I had a catheter was with c section.

I didnt have a catheter with the epi. I loved mine, although had just g&a second time round

Tapatalking so cant see signatures

A few attempts were made to give me an epi, but each attempt failed to block all feeling - it only worked down one side (this doesn't happen very often though apparently.)

I found it to be quite painful and as others have said, fairly difficult to try and stay still when you are having contractions.

In the end, LO's heartbeat dropped rapidly, so I ended up having to have an emergency CS under a general.

Now, if I lean forward too far, I get quite a lot of pain in the area that the attempts were made - I don't know if this is just co-incidence or not though.

I had to have a catheter but it was literally popped in emptied and back out again and I didn't have a c-section just normal gas and air delivery but my bladder was full and close to birth so just be aware you could still have to have a catheter even if you don't have a section but also didn't feel it being done as I was in too much pain with the labour to even bother x

I didn't have one - have a dodgy back and with a little one on the way (literally) couldn't afford not to feel as would likely throw my back out.

Other reason I didn't want one was cos I wanted to stay mobile (I'd never heard of the one where you can move that a pp mentioned) - it worked super well to be able to stay on my feet and walk about and lean over the back of the bed. Would have gone the final push like that but ds was back to back and mw told me she'd like me on my back in the trad position as I'd likely tear otherwise - she had to cut me in the end - didn't feel a thing either then or after when she sewed me up - presume she have me a local but the adrenaline takes a lot of pain away. But on my back, where I think you normally have to be if you have epi, I couldn't feel the contractions any more and really struggled to put the force into my pushing - it was rubbish and think that's why she had to cut. This time gonna do everything I can to put bub in the right position beforehand - I always wake up on my back tho
