Hi girls,

I read some info about labour yesterday... And am a bit confused about why sometimes women are not allowed to push when they want to, or asked to push if they do not feel like pushing??

I thought doctors usually tell you to listen to your body etc, so if the body tells you to push, surely it's what you should do, and the other way around? I want to have as natural birth as possible, and this sounds really strange to me.

I googled this question and found this article:

http://naturalchildbirthedu.com/2010/03/30/to-push-or-not-to-push/

What do you girls think?

I've not read the article, but sometimes your body can tell you to push when you're not ready to, I.e you've got a lip of cervix left in the way and you can actually tear your cervix  and sometimes if baby's getting a bit distressed whilst pushing you can be told to wait a bit I think! With my 2nd I had a super fast labour and mu body was actually pushing without me realising!

MMG&I I guess so... still sounds very unnatural :(

I know what you mean Hun! Nature needs a little guidance every now and again tho xx

Sorry, i've not had a chance to read the article either but I know if you push when your not meant to push it can rip you down there, midwife will say push, then dont push ect, its really hard not to.

:)

I got told not to push! Was getting the urge constantly, but was having one contraction after the other. Its so you don't tear. x

Its so u dont tear and it can put pressure on babys head causing it to swell and possibly damage brain or get stuck leading to c-section. the pressure feeling can make u wanna push.. it feels like u need a poo really badly and its natural instinct to push it out!
Also the cord was round jaycees neck so half way thru pushing i was told to stop.. very hard but it saved her life as she wasnt breathing and cold when she came out :(
I know someone whos mws didnt tell her to stop and baby died due to the cord around the neck.. so even though your body is telling you to do things, you MUST listen to your mw as they know what they are doing and can see when you are ready to push x

Jayceesmumma OMG... thanks for the info - I'll definitely listen to the mw now!!

Didn't mean it to sound so scary but didn't know how else to word it lol! Defo listen to mw.. Of course ur body knows what it wants so when u feel pressure tell them and they will check you coz the pressure is the head coming down.. It just depends how far down whether u can push or not.. I had pressure at 9cm and wanted to push too but had to hold off til I was 10cm and they said it was time :)

my mw said to me..'i will give you the best piece of advice, when we say dont push DONT PUSH!'.....he he xx

Its good advice , when I was told to stop pushing and sort of pant the urge away it was because I was about to tear . I didnt listen :( ouchies

I don't know how but panting does help when they tell you to.. I'd love to know why!

I didn't listen either, had to go to theater straight after coz I tore bad! Listen to MW :) x

I think the part that your thinking about is when the womans cervix isn't ready to start pushing as apposed to pushing when you're crowning.

When the baby crowns you're told to follow the instructions about panting through some of it. Whereas if your body is telling you to push before your ready then as MMG&I has said, it can basically mean a section. I felt the urgh to push quite alot because baby was back to back and sometimes I couldnt help it but I still had a lip of cervix left and the midwife had to try and convince me to not push. Sometimes, usually if the womans had an epi, theyll wait until your 10cm and then give you another hour before pushing because then the baby should be lower and so making the pushing process easier and shorter when the time comes :)

I agree listen to MW or doctor I stopped pushing when they told me to and i didn't tear at all x

It can be to try and not deliver you babies head too fast , when the head is almost out you naturally ease the baby out without pushing . When i felt i needed to push i couldnt becausei was in the car en route and i breathed in and out focussing on my body and i could feel my body easing baby down naturally! x
