Hi all,

My son is 9, he has autism and his maturity age is younger, prob half his actual age.
I was wondering if there is anyone else with children with additional needs and if they have any ideas for christmas presents or know of good places to shop, including online? I struggle every year so thought I would think about it now, to be prepared.
He doesn't engage in imaginative play, he loves music, the laptop and dvd's but has a range of these things...
Any ideas welcomed xx

What about something sciencey or technical- im not 100% sure if you could get something in a suitable "age range". you dont say how severe your son's autism is but my young cousin used to enjoy gifts where he had to follow instructions - maybe like a simple mechano set or something.

Or what about some simple board games with easy to follow rules, that would encourage him to play with others.

xxx

Those little Vtech kidizoom cameras are ace, you take pictures, distort them, you can muffle your voice etc :)

Are you attending physio? Could they recommend anything? X

Hiya,

thanks for your replies. His autism is fairly severe in some respects and then moderate in others. he has lot of sensory issues that he finds difficult to handle.
He is not a fan of board games, I got him some last year and he looked at me as if to say "what were you thinking?" lol. He is a tricky one but I will do as you suggested and ask his Occupational Therapist for some ideas...I dont know why I didnt think of that!!
Thanks again ladies, I really appreciate any ideas xx

Does he like any particulate site? Like club penguin? Or moshi monsters? Xxx

Sorry daisy, only just seen this, no he is a pain in the bum (in a nice way, lol)
He loves music, mcfly, pink, busted etc. That is his main interest.
Loves the HM forces figures so will stock up on those xx

Does he have a music system? I think one of those cd player boombox things would be a fab pressure and some cd's of his fave bands, also maybe get some photo frames (the A4 size ones that hang on the wall) and get pics of his fave bands to put in them, or how about a karaoke machine? Xxx

Also how about some disco lights? He would be so happy singing his songs with the lights going do you think? Xxx

Wow, they are great ideas, thanks Daisy :) He has quite limited speech but a karaoke machine would prob help as he tries to sing along to his fave songs, and he would love all the pics in his room.

Thanks, you have really helped me xx

I'm so pleased you liked that idea I hope he has a wonderful Christmas xxx

My nephew is on the spectrum (quite severe in ways). I also specialised in working with children with autism on a 1-1 basis in mainstream schools. I loved the previous ideas of a stereo and the disco lights. There are also lots of music programs for children you can put onto the laptops so he could create and then play you his own music. My nephew has one and he loves it. He can make it to what he wants with no one elses opinion which is perfect for him. lol. xx

Thats a lovely idea, thanks :) do you know the name of the programs at all?
Thats exactly what my son is like, if I try to play the keyboard with me, he holds onto my wrist as if to say "what are you doing? this is my music time" lol so cheeky xx

I'm not sure of the name but they got them from the internet. Trying googling or have a look on amazon. xxxx

I was reading an article about a bean bag that was good for autistic children. If you'd like to read the article here it is:

Also if you would like to buy the bean bag here's a link:

I think that would be perfect for your son!
