Well I thought it was about time I wrote my birth story. Who knows it might be cathartic and help me get over it a little lol. I should start by saying that if someone asked me to write down the exact labour I didn't want, mine would have followed it to a t!
It all started on Friday the 6th if September. I was 3 days overdue so me and hubby dtd to see if we could kick start things! A bit later that morning I was laying in the sofa and when I got up I thought I had leaked a bit of wee. I sort of thought, are my waters trickling and decided to keep an eye over the next few hours. It did it a few more times so I called the labour ward and they told me to lie down for An hour and if I was still uncertain to call back. I ended up getting checked over later that afternoon and they confirmed my waters had indeed gone! They checked baby out and as she was all happy sent me home to see if things would start on their own overnight and booked me for an induction at 9am the next day. I should point out all through my pregnancy this was the worst thing I could think of happening as I wanted to do everything naturally and hopefully have a water birth. I ended up contracting all night every 5-10 minutes and didn't sleep. They were manageable but still pretty uncomfy. By 5am they had gone to every twenty mins so at 7.30am I woke up hubby and we for ready and headed to the hospital. The midwife inserted prostaglandin gel after establishing I was 1cm dialated... I was told I had to get to 4cm to be in with a chance of a pool birth. I was to be given til 5pm to see how I would progress. The contractions started up And got pretty intense over the next few hours and I used the birthing ball to manage the pain and kept myself mobile. Tbh I found it so uncomfy to even sit so stood for the best part of 6 hours. I later found out that she was back to back which was why I was soooo uncomfy. Mw offered me pain relief but I was still coping ok on my own at this point. So 5 o'clock came round and I was checked again. Only to he told I was still only 1cm dilated and that I now had to have a syntocin drip and be placed on continuous monitoring. I was also strongly advised to have an epidural at this point as inductions by drip are incredibly painful. Cue hysteria from me as this was the last thing I wanted.... I did take their advice and the anaesthetist came and set it all up. It wasn't as bad as I anticipated having it sited but I hated that I could no longer mobilise and use gravity to help me. So they told me they would be checking me every 4 hours to see how I was dilating so I used the opportunity to catch up on some rest as I had now been awake a long time. My epidural then ran out and all the anaesthetists were in theatre dealing with emergencies. I started having massive pains in my right hip and had to use gas and air to get me through the agony of it. I was told it must of been how her head was positioned in my pelvis. My god I have never experienced anything like it! Not what I thought contractions would be like at all! The mw got verbal position to top up my epidural after a long 2 hours rolling round in agony but it dropped my blood pressure and they couldn't pick up babies heart beat. My hubby said he was absolutely terrified at this point that he was going to lose both of us and has since said he never wants to see me go through anything like this again! There was half hour of panic as they had to get me in a position that baby found acceptable. This was on my left hand side. The doctor finally came and sorted out my epi and about 2 hours later I felt a massive amount of pressure and a need to push. It was 3am on Sunday morning and it turned out I was finally 10cms dilated! I was then told I had to try and not push for 2 hours so the epi could wear off a little And I would be Able to feel my contractions. So at 5am I was told it was time to push. I was pretty exhausted bit determined to get the baby out on my own but it was not to be :( 2 hira of pushing later and they said her head was stuck at a point in my pelvis cos she was facing the wrong way. They said they now had to get her out and called in the doctor to do a ventouse delivery. I had to have a episiotomy and after 20 mins of very hard work and the theat of forceps if I didn't get her out with one more push, Phoenix Summer was born. She was placed straight onto my chest and I bawled my eyes out. She then was whisked off to be checked over by the paediatric dr who was there on standby. Her apgar was 9 after five mins so she was placed back on my chest. It was the most magical feeling in the world but I can honestly say I've never been so exhausted in all my life! Little Phoenix got an infection due to being out of my waters for over 48 hours so had to have antibiotics which thankfully she responded to very quickly. We were in for 36 hours and then allowed home :) The midwives and drs at frimley park were absolutely amazing and made my nightmare labour that little bit more manageable. As horrid as it all was, my baby is beyond amazing and was worth every pain and stitch! We are both doing well now and that's all that matters! Sorry my story is so long but I wanted to get it all down to remember it! Xxx
