Ok - basically I'm a huge arachnophobic. Small spiders I can deal with but the other day the HUGEST spider I had ever seen crawled down the wall in front of me and it was all I could do to keep from screaming. I couldn't even be in the same room as it. OH dealt with it by taking it outside in a little plastic lunch box and it is a measure of how bad I am that I didn't even like handling the box AFTER the spider was long gone!

Snakes, mice, insects in general, etc don't bother me, it's literally just spiders. I have been known to let slugs and snails crawl on my hands to let the children in school see them. OH doesn't like those!

The thing is, it's very important for me not to transmit that phobia to Naomi. I have a hard time doing it but I hold back the freakout when she's with me and point and say - oh what a lovely spider. Luckily she had gone to bed in the episode with the HUGE spider.

But it's going to get harder and harder to hide it from her! I suppose I could get hypnotised or summat but I don't trust that form of therapy.

Anyone any ideas?

I have issues with Cockroaches.... and there are LOTS AND LOTS of them here.... and whats worse... THEY FLY!!!!!.... My phobia is that bad that I cannot sleep in the house with the windows open unless the mosquito netting is over them...in case they fly into my house and....and.... *shudders... One flew in the bedroom once and I couldn't sleep in there for three weeks and when one crawled across my foot, I was actually physically sick, had to wash my foot in bleach.

I've already transmitted the fear to my daughter    So it would be nice to hear any ways to deal with such phobias... I think hypnotherapy is the only way with me too...

I'm guilty of this too as I'm totally freaked by bees and wasps, I scream and run away and so does paris :(

Yeah, I share the whole spider phobia thing too although so does my OH and he's worse than me so in a battle in who has to deal with the huge spider I usually have to deal with it! (Unless my OH takes off his glasses so that he can only see a blur and then whacks it with his DM boot although I don't like him killing them so I usually weaken and put them out). With Mel we are trying to go with a "yay spiders, aren't they nice" line with the hope that eventually he can remove them for us! However as my mum learned with big fat garden toads if your kids find out that you don't like something you can bet that that's what you'll be presented with on a regular basis!

My Grandad apparently also had a problem with spiders, he used to get my mum to deal with them "because you shouldn't be afraid of them"- it wasn't until my mum was a teenager that my Nan told her that he was just terrifed of them and wanted my mum to remove them for him! Mum doesn't mind spiders, only big warty toads (which I rather like!)

Thats what we are doing too, showing Aimee spiders and insects and trying to get her interested. I'm terrifed of them all! Jess is now scared of them too so I'm trying to make a big effort with Aimee and pretend that I like them. I remember when I lived on my own I had this big spider on my wall and I was to scared to even squash it so I hair sprayed it to death and it stayed stuck to my wall till I moved out!, Lol
