Hello,

Had blood tests to check for pcos in August, these confirmed I had not ovulated that month. However I still have a period every month and get peaks on OPK's :S Recent ultrasound scan confirmed pcos.
Been to see Dr today for scan results - she recommended another day 21 blood test but no medication e.g metformin? Even though she mentioned that in the past.

Do any other sufferers have any tips or advice for how to manage pcos naturally?

xx

Hiya,
I have pcos and have not been given any medication. I don't always have periods, sometimes I do and for a few months they are 'normal' and sometimes I don't. I've had loads of blood tests but only one has been taken on the correct day and that did indicate ov, were your bloods taken on the correct days they need to be done 8 days after a positive opk if I am remembering that right?

It is possible to get positive opks and not ovulate as sometimes the body won't actually release the egg. Some pco ladies get a strong opk line all the time, I'm not one of those so I can use opks but as I said it doesn't mean the egg gets released, nice to know there might be one there though so that is why I do them!

My doctor did say metformin would be something I could try but my consultant at the fertility clinic overruled her and said no. My bloods came back ok for the insulin resistance though so this may be why? In the meantime I've started taking inositols as this is supposed to help with pcos. It says you need to take them for three months before you start to notice a difference, I've been taking them for two and a bit and just had a 'proper' period, so could be it starting to take effect. Ask me in a few months time! Since taking the inositol I've also lost a few kg, being as I've not changed anything else it must be doing something.

I was told to eat a low gi diet, it seems I mostly do this already so the change hasn't been too bad to make.

Mainly they say to manage by diet and exercise. I do an active job with active hobbies and have done all my life so I don't know if that is an acceptable answer to be honest, like I say my diet was mostly low gi beforehand too so it can't be the be all and end all of it otherwise I wouldn't have it so badly. I'm a bit shocked and disgusted with the way I've been treated, really no help or advice has been offered, maybe they just don't know how to treat it?

Thanks for your reply :)
I assumed that if you have a period it means you have ovulated, but that is not the case apparently. I think I had the last blood test on day 23 because my cycle was a bit longer. I can't remember when she said to do the next one, but I assume 7/8 days after positive opk? I usually get that on day 16/17.

I have heard metformin is old fashioned so that could be why also? Also can have bad side effects. I haven't had any blood tests for insulin resistance? should they have done that?

Will inositols be any good for me if I already get a monthly period? where do you get them from?

Yes I am trying the low GI thing, but like you I already kind of have that diet, just a few things I need to try and cut out.

I was kind of upset about the way I was treated too, my dr is lovely but just seems she doesn't know enough about it all. She was the one that mentioned metformin in past, then when we got the diagnosis from my scan she changed her mind. She also said she won't refer me to a specialist for another 18 months. x
