Sorry I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but I'm looking for some advice/support! I'm just about to reach 42 weeks with my first and am starting to worry. We are still planning a home birth but we know our baby is already rather large. I've had some pains today which I'm hoping may be signs starting to show. Has anyone ever had a similar experience, or have any advice? Is a home birth a bad idea at this stage?

Have you spoken to your midwife regarding home birth at this stage? I have no idea what their guidelines are but I do know youe within your rights to say you don't want to be induced if that is what you wish for and I think a midwife will see you daily for a week.
Have you tried natural methods to kick start labour or had a sweep? Xx

This is completely personal choice on your part, though if it was me I wouldn't risk it. Particularly as it is your first birth and the baby is large. I had a bad experience on the pushing part with my daughter (also large baby) and had I not been in hospital I dread to think what would have happened. Though midwives are trained to deal with such scenarios I suppose, I gave birth in theatre with a team of people looking after my baby afterwards.

I hope you get the experience you want and a safe arrival of your baby x

There is no reason to suspect that you would not be suitable for a home birth at this stage. If your body has grown the baby we will assume in most cases that your body will birth the baby.
If it's the likes of shoulder dystocia that concern you, its worth noting that over half of shoulder dystocia's are with average sized babies, and in any case, as above, midwives are trained to deal with these instances in a home birth scenario.
If it is your wish to carry on with a home birth then I would go with it, until you are advised otherwise - and even then, the choice is yours.

Thank you to everyone who replied, your advice was much appreciated! I'm glad to say things have progressed since last night and active labour began for me at about 9am. No more time to worry thankfully! I wish you all good luck and a merry christmas!
