Hello  my due date for round no 2 is fast approaching and I'm getting everything organised including all the stuff I may need for BF. My last attempt at BF ended in disaster due to bring poorly and hospitalised away from baby which at the time was gut wrenching. So this time Im being prepared for any eventuality. I want to take nipple shields in my hospital bag in case I have latch problems. What I want to know is what size shields do you get and how on earth do you measure your nipples?

Also I've seen nipple formers which can be used before baby arrives. I don't have inverted or flat nipples (TMI) but I do want these puppies primed and ready to go. So anyone used them and any use?

I exclusively use nipple shields as my lo won't latch without them, so any questions just ask!

I've got the medela shields (which are the only ones advised my midwives) and just went for the 16mm ones. I would say I have average sized nipples & they fit perfectly with a small space around the shield so they don't rub & get sore. The measurement is the width of the bottom of your nipple not the length.

I don't know anything about nipple formers but I would think if you don't have unusual nipples then you shouldn't need them x

Not sure about nipple shields but if you want to get your nipples toughened up a bit myself and my friend (who was pregnant at the same time as me) both swore by getting the breast pump out from 37 weeks and giving them a pump.

I think I did 15 mins 3 x day. Was a bit tough but it hardened them up for when baby was here!

Only suitable from full term though as nipple stimulation can induce labour!

Dont know much about nipple shields but make sure you.have contacts for local NCT/breastfeeding cafe/LLL, it does help.
Good luck and i am always ready to help z

I will be giving you the pep talk! You dont need to use anything if your nipples arent inverted. All you need is Lansinoh and determination.
To give you an example - my SIL had retained placenta/lost lots of blood/3 ops/intensive care/baby not next to.her at all. My brother did skin to skin, made sure she was cup/syringe fed etc. You need to put things in your birth plan to make sure they know your wishes. Even if the baby has to havr some formula, its not the end of the journey. You can do it!

The lansinoh is on the way. I shall be priming my nips with it and flicking them to toughen them up. I will do this.
