Nightfeeds Chat Thread

It's worth remembering that taking milk from a bottle is far easier than the boob though. They have to work harder on the boob to fill up but they're in control rather than us. William would down 7oz if I let him but he'd regret it later! Xxx

This is the only thing keeping me going, whenever I've given small top ups, j always pukes
Thanks for the link mrse

Now Emily has had the bottle she is relaxed, led in her bed. She was screaming before so surely she must of needed it. I know from the boob they make their own supply but I've spent all night and she was distraught each time I put her down. Surely that can't be right? At least the bottle was still breast. I need to pump like crazy tom x

Ahhh, the joys of BF...sometimes I really think why don't I just bottle feed, so much easier at times lol. I always found LO less settled in the evening and she cluster fed every evening. If I pumped in the day, I didn't have enough milk for her next feed!
I do cheat now and she has a bottle at night. But that was following several consultations with lactation consultants, two tongue tie cuts, courses of galactogouges...I tried everything to up my supply!

Were back to twice nightly wake ups again. Each time shes up for 1.5h at a time ish :-( seems like this is her new routine and we've not even hit the 4m sleep regression yet! Xx

Well poor Max has a cough from hell so last couple of nights have been horrific. I'm hoping once he's well we'll finally start to get some good sleep.. He is nearly 5 months after all!!!

Glad to see there is some progress ladies! It really does get better, even with Max's cough I am only actually feeding him once, the rest of the time it's just settling him again xxx

Sophie_Jane thanks so much for your response a few days ago. I was given some great free advice by a sleep expert at this website: http://www.baby-sleep-advice.com/ - highly recommended. We are more than 5 weeks into the dark period of being woken every two hours. Many IQ points have been lost down the long dark tunnel, but we still have our sense of humour (or is it hysteria? Who cares?!)

Glad I could help, Maru. What advice were you given? What were their thoughts as to why your LO wakes?
I've had a crap afternoon/evening that has involved lots of projectile vomiting and a trip to The out of hours doctor. My poor LO has a virus. Am giving her the first feed of the night. Really hope she can keep it down... I'm down to the last set of pjs and sleeping bag for her!

I hope you all have good nights. Hannah has been grumpy and clingy all day. Scared about tonight!

X

Hello ladies long time no speak. Far is def in a routine. Last bottle about 6/7 the sleeps till 1am. Bottle. Then sleeps till 7am. Im quite happy with that S getting decent sleep in between x

Oh no Sophie, poor thing! Has your night improved at all?
Constantstar that sounds pretty good :-)

Well we've been having two wake ups a night now for a few weeks which sucks when I was just getting used to the one wake up! Only boob will settle her which means a new habit/routine seems to be forming. She has a dream feed too, but still wakes only a few hours later, so I'm not sure she is really waking for hunger! She will wake around 1 regardless of dream feed or not :-(

Its so nice that success is also welcome here, gives me hope! !!!

First feed since 12.30, so pretty pleased. Downloaded a new "baby white noise" app and j seems much more settled blaming this. I managed to pump a little milk earlier too so had a top up available for last feed st 11.30 til 12.30.,

Ah yes the white noise app. Ewan the dream sheep is also a popular choice, I'm not sure Hannah cares now but it helps me. ... ;-) definitely helped her self settle though.

Spin we're not having one wake up anymore either. :-( I was really used to that.

Claire, how is max's cough? Coughs are the worst.

Z

Ahh sounds like your doing fab fliss!!

I've snatched a couple of hours through co sleeping. Defo can't feed laying down as can't latch. Emily seems a lot fussier feeding and is squirming more. Also always moving her head when i try to latch so I keep getting it wrong and she gets frustrated. She wriggles on boob so I'm sure it's not right and she nods off on boob so I reckon milk isn't flowing. Is it normal to take so many times of putting her on and off as I think annoys her. I think I'm just not good at latching!! Also is the fussy baby normal (she moves her head a lot on boob which I'm sure loses latch)

She was feeding for hours earlier and I'm just not sure she's getting enough due to me getting it wrong. I even find her head heavy to hold (and she's only tiny) god knows how I'll cope as she gets bigger!!

When do these one wake ups kick in :) how soon did you guys notice a routine x

Once the get bigger you can kind of rest them on your lap. I find feeding him now easier than when he was a newbie!

We didn't start to notice any real routine with him until about 15 weeks, then we introduced a bedtime routine & he dropped from 2 feeds down to 1 by about 17 weeks. He's 21 weeks now & in a very definite routine x

I'm not even wanting to think about dealing with illness yet!!

Laura, don't beat yourself up about your milk flow, we are only 10 days in here! Your milk supply isn't fully in til 3 weeks. I've ordered a medela pump (there are some good price ones on e bay), on the advice of a friend of mine. She's done a grand job bf her 10 month old but had all these issues early doors. She said that the medela pump really got the supply line on track. X

Thanks Spin. She woke 3times moaning to herself each time. Hopefully when she wakes up she'll feel better.
Your situation sounds similar to mine, spin. They wake because they've still got the milk alarm set internally even though they're not hungry. We're going to do an interesting experiment at the weekend. OH is going to have the cot his side of the bed and when she wakes, he has to say there's nomilk and settle her. He's allowed to pick her up, tock her, have her in bed with him, but there's no milk. Apparently after 3 night's, if it's going to work it will. Will keep you posted!

I've got a medela swing off a friend and the hospital kindly gave me spare tubing and valves etc. problem is I have been to tired to use it as feeding all day!!

Tonight got worse, she wouldn't take my nipple and was screaming, shaking her head side to side, pulling off the breast. I've been trying to feed her since 3am and I think my bad latch means milk isn't getting through. As I haven't been on the pump I've had no breastmilk to give her so had to resort to formula. Really didn't want to but she seemed starving and so distressed :(

How's your night been? X

You're doing so well to hold out here. Don't worry about the odd formula, its not going to mean its all over. J was like that yesterday, so hungry she was furious with me! Better night last night with 2 hr stretches of sleep x3. Going to land her on dh soon once she's fed so I can try get a few more hrs...:nap:
He won't be here next week so I might as well enjoy it :)
And yay, its bath day  j and I have a nice bath every othrr day. She loves it, gurgles at me when you let her float in the water!
