Hi ladies,

Am a bit confused about what to buy in terms of bedding!

We have a bedside crib, and so far I know I definitely need a mattress protector, and a couple of crib sheets.

But then what? Celllular blankets? Sleeping bag? Or if you are swaddling, what have you bought for that?

Any how many of each?!

Any advice appreciated, there are so many options I just don't know!

Will be following this - i have no idea - if you get sleeping bags do you get bedding as well or do you just put them on the sheet? Do you put a blanket on top of them in the sleeping bag? Also getting a bedside crib for first few months which is obviously much smaller than normal cot so assume will need different bedding for that too but no idea... Totally clueless :)

I know for sure you don't put a blanket on if you are using a sleeping bag cos they can over heat.
And I know you can get crib sheets which are smaller than cot sheets. But that is it.
Hopefully someone will chime in soon and say what they have got!

You can only use sleeping bags when LO is above a certain weight so we used cellular blankets for first couple of weeks. We also bought one of these to swaddle which was one of our best buys!!

hi 4wks in n these are my recommendations...

1. buy plenty of crib sheets! we now have six which are enough for cleaning cycle for when she pukes lol...

2. havent swaddled with her aside from first night but had a zip up one n some velcro ones

3. just sheets as they recommend no blankets til older unless they're not warm enuff in various layers, our house is warm consistently 21-23 so babygrow is all she needs...

4. have sleeping bags but not using yet...

Thanks ladies.

Ok I thought 2 crib sheets was enough, clearly I need more.
And our house is definitely no way near that warm, so think will need cellular blankets or the swaddle. That swaddle thing looks hilarious, but also can see how it might be really useful!

We were told by midwife that a newborn suitable sleeping bag would be fine, they have poppers to make the arm holes smaller to suit new little babies so we're hoping that will be enough from the start! We'll have a couple of thin blankets as well so just in case I'm not quite sure with the sleeping bag we can use those for the first nights. And then there's the whole tog system... Lots to think of! :/ xx

Our LO used to keep waking herself up thrashing her arms about so when she was swaddled she slept much better!

If it helps, I know you can use muslin squares as swaddles, crib sheet and extra layer.

I have the two sheets, mattress protector and blanket that came in the snuz pod bundle but haven't yet worked out what blanket to use - don't know whether to get another snuz pod blanket so he's used to the same thing or a cellular blanket x

As a mummy to two I'd recommend sleeping bags- super easy to use, and most can be used from newborn.
I'd also recommend getting some cellular blankets- we use these for all sorts, in the crib at night, during the day, out and about. They're cheap, and cheerful and are nice and lightweight

Depending on what bedside crib you have, I'd prob recommend at least 4 crib sheets. Just means if they puke, and you have to change it, you don't immediately have to do a wash that day

Also another tip- when you've put your sheet on the crib, I usually fold a muslin cloth in half, and lay it where the head goes- so if they puke in the night, you don't have to change the sheets, just pop a new cloth on xx

So here's a question I still can't suss... It's say 8pm and you're in the first couple of weeks with a newborn. Do you keep them in the lounge where me and oh are whilst they are sleeping OR if you've got a bedside crib do they go in there on the bedroom at this sort of time with s monitor you can watch until you go to bed????

I just can't figure it out, you hear at some point they need to know the difference between day and night so how will they know this if they stay in the lounge with us until late???

Am I being silly? Overthinking but? Over cautious about them sleeping in another room for a bit??

hi elliott, the night and day thing is achieved by dimming lights, reducing sound, esp when feeding/nappy changing etc...we are currently both off work and to keep our sanity we operate a shift reotation atm whereby hubby looks after her 9pm to 3am and I do 3am to 9pm ensuring we both get some uninterrupted sleep, therefore for us she does stay in the same room but its a lot quieter...she still doesnt sleep longer than 2.5hr bursts so havent yet introduced us both in another room and using monitors, plus she's a noisy sleeper so hear everything through it whereas when you're in same room you learn which ones to listen out for and which ones to ignore, we then nap when we are in same room on the sofa with her in crib or on us if she's extra fussy...

Thanks kitten. I knew about the making it quiet and dark part so that something at least haha but didn't know to what extent to apply it. I think I'm just going to have to ask the most questions ever of midwives and health visitors! :s

I am confused about that too Elliott! I do think at some point baby has to learn to go down in a room by themselves at a set time but have no idea when is reasonable to start that x

Thank Belles, nice to not be only one! I figure first few weeks for sure are s bit of a free for all and just going with what happens but after that???? I can't imagine patent all sat silently in the dark, I think it comes back to the question I'm scared to ask invade people judge....which is when can you leave baby in a room on their own??? As in if I'm in the lounge with baby in Moses basket or similar and I need something in the kitchen, glass of water or something simple....are you ok to go and get that leaving baby in lounge alone for a min????

This issue along with the blankets and things has me baffled haha

after first couple of nights we did that mayflower for our sanity as well as getting her used to crib before altering rooms... we are still doin that now 6hrs each as im lucky hubby off work still to help out...

Elliott, we have cameras set in each room so if we're out of room for more than a min we take receiver with us but toilet is usually quick, luckily we're in bungalow so quick dart from lounge lol... like mayflower says, ensure theyre not likely to roll/grab blankets etc n you should be fine...

good idea beckyboo with muslin but our LO is very tactile n think she wudfind a way to grab it...lol

I like the idea of taking shifts. How does it work if you're BF'ing? I was going to start a shift from 6 weeks old and leave DH with baby and expressed milk and then I could take over at midnight as then he'd still get to sleep from midnight - 7am probably which is a good sleep! x
