Hello all

I have been registered on this fantastic site for a few years now but things have started to get serious with TTC..

We've been actively trying for around 2years now and with no success we visited the doctors for try and have things checked.

Doctor was lovely and very supportive, advised I would need a Day 21 Blood and OH would need a SA ;) (Much to his embarrassment)

Anyway, all tests done and results are in and not looking good :(

My bloods were all good, hormone levels were high so shown ovulation but my gorgeous OH has a sperm issue. He has 5% mobility with 84% abnormality.. Bless him he's taken it so badly and really feels to blame for it.. I've constantly reassured him and said he means more to me than anything and we're in this together :)

What I'm asking advice for is, he's been referred to our local Gynaecology unit, but just him, no mention of me?! Is this normal?
We have the appointment for the 11th October at 10:40 so cant wait to get started.

I have him taking Vitamin E, Zinc & Selenium tabs along with no alcohol, caffeine and getting plenty of fruit & Veg and exercise.

Would love to hear from anyone even just to say hello

Baby dust & big hugs to you all
Lindsey & Andy xxxx

Hiya,

I am not sure what the process of referral is with sperm issues so don't know if gynae is the right department or not. My OH had low motility-it was 18% forward progressive motility, (they didn't consider this too much of an issue but means can take longer etc) after taking wellman conception for a couple of months, its gone up to around 80% (something like that) so those vits may help.
I hope that all goes well with the appointment and that they can give you advice on the next steps towards your bfp.
I am sorry I don't have much advice but I didn't want to read and run :) x

Cant wait to go & get the ball moving... I spoke to an Embrologiest last week & she said it was a normal routine in Leicestershire...

We're off to our first appt at the hospital fertility dept in a few days, we've been referred due to bad Sa results - 13million, 40% motility, 97% abnormal. They've done all the paperwork in my name still though. Will keep in touch on here anyway as it sounds like we'll be on similar journeys! Good luck with yours :)
As for how hubby took it - not well. He keeps blaming himself and saying what a failure he is, he's even said a few times 'I hope you don't leave me because I can't get you pregnant'. Breaks my heart to think he feels like that, but I've assured him its not his fault, it's just one of those things. I hope we both get our longed for little babies soon. Xx

Aw that's reassuring to know we're going through similar lovely, tough as it'll be we know we're not alone...

Andrew says the same about, he's worrying he's not a real man & getting so upset but we've got day trips and fun things to look forward too.

I'm not sure on OH's sperm amount but Doc said he had good amounts just poor/lazy sperm.

Yes please keep me posted & I will you to...

Keeping everything crossed for you & your OH too

There are a few of us spermy challenged peeps, we have between 13 and 22 mil per mg (2 tests) and only 2-3% are normally formed. Motility is fine though. DH was totally in denial, we're both v shocked as we have a daughter conceived very easily who is 3.5 and DH has a son from a previous relationship also conceived very easily. We have our fertility appointment on 10th October, not sure what will happen and we won't get any funded treatment as we have a child so in the meantime I've hubby on a barrage of vitamins etc and I'm preying for a miracle as we're are getting old xx

Aw Dee28 bless you lovely...
Wishing you all the best at your appointment xxx

Hi there

My hubby has a count less than 2 mil and took the news pretty badly too o I kno how u and ur hubby must b feeling. My hubby was referred to urologist, I phoned up the department before his appt to see if I could attend with him and they said yes it would helpful if I did. They asked me a few questions and ensured I had both day 21 bloods done and a recent smear test both were clear. My hubby was examined nd they took loads of bloods from him. He had grade 3 large at icicles which they r sure has caused his sperm to deplete to such a low number. All hs bloods came back fine hs testosterone levels good, FSH level good and no genetic abnormalities. He has had his varicoceles removed and they will retest his sperm in a couple months to see if therei any improvement. In meantime we hav been referred to fertility clinic as we wer told if his sperm count remains this lw the only way forward for us is ICSI. Keep us posted on how ur hubby gets on at his appt and feel free to pm me if u want a chat about anything. Welcome by the way :-) :hugs: the ladies on here r so lovely xxx

Hi YvonneM

Thank you for your lovely reply, your right everyone is so lovely & helpful :)

Bless you both, sounds like you've been put through it all too... I've just read the replies to Andy & he said it makes him feel less alone and that other men do have similar problems..

I just wonder why he's been referred to Gyno rather than Urologist like a lot of other men.. I guess it's just different hospitals and routines. Our Assisted Fertility clinic have been so lovely and helpful and they even offer a free counselling session for us should we need too :)

Going back to your tests, when Andy goes to the appointment (me with him) What tests do they normally do on the first appointment? Will they request bloods? (He's petrified of needles)

Thanks again for your help & I may take you up on the lovely offer of PM'ing :)

Xxx

We yo have mf and he also takes it really badly and I get all the 'nit a real man' stuff too. Have they mentioned icsi or iui to you? It's a long tough journey but you will get there x

We got our first gynae appointment through in PP's name but after that it changed to mine as apparently they always do things in the woman's name in fertility.

From what I've been told your oh's abnormality levels are fine. Apparently current guidelines are out of date and my fertility clinic advised that they are being changed to reflect that anything up to 96% abnormal forms is actual a normal result! Sounded very high to me but that's what they said. My oh's abnormality results were 95% and 93% for his 2 SA results.

Is his motility figure the full percentage of motile sperm? They separate them out into rapidly motile and motile and you need to add these together. The combined figure might show sperm that are sluggish but still within the normal parameters. My oh's rapidly motile sperm were only 3% in the first SA and this they said overall it was a normal result. It had risen a lot in the second SA.

You might be surprised that they think the results are better than you think. Good luck xx

Hiya hon

As the girls have said there's a few of us with SA issues

My OH had 6 mil on first & 10 mil on second not 100% sure what motility & mobility were but I'm waiting for the paperwork to see, I think on the 2nd test it was around 24% could be wrong?

I've had him on wellman conception, selenium and the Vit c & zinc dispensable tablets as well as no alcohol and healthy eating and he's dropping about a stone

We had all normal bloods and stuff taken and OH has also had a USS on his bits as he had a lump which they have said is only a cyst

I had my hsg yesterday and now just waiting for our consultant appointment but the spermies doctor said we are more than likely looking at IVf

OH surprised me with how well he has taken it, he was devastated at first and said men are put on this earth to make babies and he couldn't even give me that and didn't feel like a "man" but he's been fantastic since, I've been trying to be very positive, he's also been positive, sometimes has down days but both of us do but he's open and willing to do anything that's needed

He said its all made him really realise how much he wants a baby

It's a good job that we love dtd too as we don't have any "right time" pressure. Usually I don't tell him when it is, as long as I know it all usually works out well ;-)

Good luck with everything hon sorry for the ramble xx

No prob Hun, it makes me feel really good if I can be of any help to anybody in a similar position to me and hubby. Il admit I was a wreck when we wer first aware of our situation but through being on this forum and trying to do nice things like mini breaks away with hubby, I have started to accept it all a bit better now :-)
My hubby just had loads bloods taken on his first urology appt, he was also given a prostate examination and the doctor had a physical examination of his man bits lol he was mortified but said its not at all as bad as he thought. And yup he is also petrified of needles but the nurse was great with him and I jus made sure he ate a big breakfast that morning and had a choice bar ready for him afterwards and he has been known to faint!! That's ace u hav been offered counselling, we weren't but we were thinking of asking our GP about this as my hubby isn't that great with talking about how he is feeling he tends to put on a front that everything is fine. But every now and then he will admit that he feels like a failure which will get me upset. Our urologist reassured him tho that he sees loads of men in a similar situation and that due to ICSI there is a good chance our dreams of having a baby could def come true :-) xxx

Hello lovely ladies
