saw this post on another forum that i use yesterday

My daughter had a baby last week.
Was suprised to hear the nurse telling my daughter, who is bottle feeding, not to make up a supply of bottles and store them in the fridge, but to make them up as she needed them.
They have suggested she can store the boiled water in a flask. This isnt what it says on the SMA milk, and SMA told me the dept of health is giving out this advice to hospitals.I rang the dept.,who eventualyy said that they now realise this info isnt entirely practical, and they will be changing it as for example its not practicle for people with kids in daycare nurseries.
Has anyone else heard about this? Its new to me.

has anyone heard anything about this?

They did mention this at m & b group, but tbh even the midwives and hv's weren't impressed by it. I say if your baby is ok, carry on doing what you're doing!!

i make all mine up in advance it would be a nightmare making them up when needed!!! besides if that was the case then surely they shouldnt sell it in cartons pre mixed

thats exactly what i thought they seem to like to change everything on a week to week basis  it made me wonder though that if this is what is being given as advice to first time mums who dont know any different its going to make their lives a lot more difficult!

I agree, they just get bored I think so find something to change!!

I have heard of this, I went to a first time mums class thingy and the HV there advised everyone that they now recommend that you make them up as you need them. if I remember rightly she said its something to do with the risk of bacteria if you make them up in advance.

It was quite funny as every new mum there said what rubbish! and all said they were going to carry on making them up in advance.

I have always made mine in advance and stored them in the fridge, as long as you dont go over 24 hours i think personnally your quite safe.

With Damien's bottle I put 5oz of cooled boiled water in his bottles and leave them on the side so they stay sterile. When Damien wants a bottle, I boil the kettle, at 2oz of freshly boiled water and then add the powder so it's all fresh. It is always the same temp and saves on warming times.

When he was younger I used to make them all up in advance and chuck in the fridge though and never had a problem.

I make my bottles as i need them, i think they were advising this due to the build up of bacteria, but i haven't sterilised his bottles since he was 6 months i shove them in the dish washer or clean them with hot water - after all we don't sterilise all our cups etc!

hmm, I have been making my bottles as I need them, and frankly, I don't feel it has made my life a hell!

I mean, when maheen was born, it was, what, 6 bottles per 24 hours, and now, it's 4, so I don't find it difficult!

I use cow and gate, and it says not to put water and milk together to warm up! just to warm water and then, add the powder! and it says once it's been done, it should be used within one hour! so, I would not feel comfortable leaving it in the fridge.
Having said that, I know we all do things differently, and as long as our LO are fine, then...why not ! I mean, I use Evian water to prepare the feeds, and I know, a lot of people would think I am mad!

Mel xx

i always put water inj the bottles and leave them on the side and when Abi wants a bottle she either has them room temp ofr i put them in microwave for 15 seconds then add the milk, i dont think its anymore work than making them all up together but you know they're fresh :)

This is exactly the dilemma we have faced this week when we came home from hospital with our LO.

We are using Cow & Gate, I know on the SMA tins it says you can make the bottles up in batches and store them for 24 hours in the fridge.

Does anybody make up batches with Cow & Gate formula?

Our baby is on demand feeding at the moment, we haven't got a proper pattern to his feeding yet so making up bottles as you need them is very difficult.

We used Cow & Gate for the first 5 weeks and made the bottles up with cooled boiled water and put them in the back of the fridge...as long as they were used within 24 hours they are safe. We now use Cow & Gate Comfort and they are abit more difficult as you have to mix the powder with boiled water which has been left for 15 minutes so they are still quite hot, so we make 3 at a time, stand them in cold water for 5-10 mins then pop them in the back of the fridge...not had any problems and this is how they advised we make them up when I called Cow & Gate.

The midwife on the ward was contradicting as she told us that the department of health advise 1 bottle per time BUT if we wanted to make a few bottles and pop them in the fridge for later that was okay

You can make them up and store them, they advise that you dont cos of the bacteria growth. If you want to make your bottles fresh it doesn't take any longer all you do is put the water in all the bottles in one go and allow to cool then as you need a bottle add the milk shake it and warm it, or you can warm before you put the milk in, it warms quicker as it's at room temp and not cold like when it comes out of fridge, give it a go you'll be suprised :) also easier if you're out as you havent got to worry about keeping it cool, you can but a little container avent do them they have 3 seperate sections you put the right amount of powder in each one then you just add it to bottle as you need it :)
