my mums family is very typically "middleclass", and my mum i do love her but IMO she is a bit snobbish. nothing wrong with good manners but i think she is TOO preoccupied with keeping up appearances etc.

i like to think of myself as a bit of a bohemian, non-conforming, the opposite of my mum.

but she keeps nagging me about aspects of my parenting which she frowns upon.

recently have been:

swearing infront of millie (and not minding if she uses swear words in future)

and not ironing her clothes (i wash them of course but unless we're goin out i dont iron them)

i cant be doing with her going on about these trivial things. how can i explain to her to leave it alone? she said yesterday something like "oh millie's going to end up like vicky pollard". hardly!

anyone else hav relatives like this? how do u handle them?

I hate people that stick their noses in thinking they know better just coz they been there once!

As for ending up like vicky pollard...what so your daughters gonna grow into a man that dresses like a fat chav then stand on street corners with 7 babies...erm yea!!!!!!

Sorry

Ironing?! I never iron I see it as long as its folded as soon as its dry why iron it its only gonna crease when you wear it!

Have you spoken to her about how you feel or would she not listen?

remind her that your now a mum with your own way of doing things, just because she did them one way doesnt mean your way is wrong, its just different and the way that works with millie

I swear. I try so hard not to but it is day to day life now. I just dislike it as my nephew calls his mum a F***ing Idiot when he doesn't get his own way. He's four!

As for ironing......pah! My iron has seen the light on about a dozen occasions in 3 years!!! I just don't do it. My mum gets so annoyed but i say why iron if you're gonna put the clothes on and crease then? Waste of time and electric! I only do it if i'm going somewhere nice (which is very rare)

Hun, I wish I could advise...I am 42 and my Mum is still commenting on my parenting  Sometimes I say something to her, sometimes i bite my tongue...depends on how the mood takes me...all i can say is that if your ma is anything like mine, you will want to phrase things as politely as possible when you decide you do want to say something!
I mean, what can I say...my mother is the woman who irons towels  and prides herself on being laid back coz she doesnt iron underwear! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I agree with you on the ironing, I hardly ever iron and I don't intend to start when we have kids  Usually if you fold something up as soon as it's dry then it's ok.

But I'm afraid I'm not with you on the swearing, I really hate seeing children swear, then again I'm not fond of seeing adults swear either. If you swear all the time then how's someone gonna know how furious you are when you do and it can make you seem as if you have a limited vocabulary if you have to use swearing to make your point. (it's linked with good manners for me, probably an old fasioned attitude to swearing but I don't care :shakehead: :moon: ) But it's out of order to say Millie is going to end up like Vicky Pollard!

Also she's your baby and if you don't mind her swearing then it's nobody else's business, I'd never judge someone for allowing their child to swear, it's your choice how you bring up your child and no-one elses and I'm a strong beleiver that no-one is perfect and therefore no-one has the right to judge anyone else.

my mum irons hankies and knickers... I on the other believe that ironing was invented by Hitler...

My mum ALWAYS comments about the girls never being in ironed clothes, and always makes a point of washing and ironing any item of clothing she can lay her hand on...

I don't really cook either... DH does a lot of the cooking... so my mum has a go as she believes I should have a meal on the table for my husband every night to make me a good wife...

I just ignore her tbh... I won't change, neither will she and anyone who knows my mum knows that arguing with her is fighting a loosing battle...

I was pretty much going to say exactly the same as this. I will be honest though, i used to judge people alot for swearing and allowing their child to swear but since getting close to my OH's brother (who swears loads) ive realised it doesnt always rub off on the child. I still dont like it though (im an old fashioned girl aswell).

Completely with you on the ironing though!

I'm really bad for swearing and my hubby is worse  As for ironing, I dont iron Maddison's bed clothes but I do iron her every day outfits as they crease really bad in the wash

i have an ironing bible, which reads like this .....

if no ones going to see you wearing it (ie round the house) dont iron it

if someone you dont care about is going to see you wearing it (ie popping to corner shop) dont iron it

if you can get away with not ironing it (ie tops under jumpers. Hoodies or bed clothes) dont iron it

if you want to look nice (trip to cinema, sunday lunch at relatives, out on the pull) iron it

towels, bed clothes, underwear and hankies were NOT made to be ironed lol

*sigh* i have all this to look forward to. I really hate it when people comment on how you do things. Do things your way babe!

Your definately not the only one - my Mum is driving me mad at the moment! Arrgh parents sometimes

Do it your way hun.

both me and sean swear all the time  but I do iron, not bedding or night wear though

Me and Simon swear most of the time and when it comes to iron my clothes i dont bother with unless they are mega creased but i iron Willows tops, trousers and dresses.
