Hi everyone!!!

Hope you are all doing well. I am finally getting around to posting my labour story, the last few days have been busy to say the least!

Well, as you probably know I was booked in to be induced on Sunday morning at 8:30am. I had a sweep on the Saturday and off home we went to get a good nights sleep before the birth. At 2am on the dot I woke up . I got a strange popping feeling, like something had burst inside me and I said 'ouch', it didn't hurt as such but I definitely felt it. I went to the toilet and nothing had run out of me but my knickers were wet with a thick, mucussy liquid. I changed and got back in bed as I wasn't sure if it was my waters. Then I got a pain and told OH I thought it was starting. He literally sprang out of bed and was dressed in seconds. I said I was going to try and sleep a little more and see what happened, then I got another pain, stronger this time so I stood up and out my waters came! I phoned labour ward and they told us to go in.

I was quite concerned with brushing my hair before we left so we spent about 10 mins looking for my hairbrush before I realised it was in my case! By this time the contractions were still coming, very closely together so off we went. OH was timing them and said they were every 2 mins.

We got to hospital at 3am. There was a man at the labour ward reception desk who greeted us asking if I was Jenny, when I said no he looked a little confused and told us to take a seat in the reception/waiting area. Nobody came for what felt like ages, and pretty much straight away my contractions became incredibly intense, like nothing I've ever experienced before. Sweat was literally pouring off me and I was saying I was going to be sick. OH got me one of those sick trays and some poor woman who happened to be sitting there put wet tissue on the back of my neck to cool me down. My contractions at this stage were not going at all, they were constant, but did intensify every 30 seconds for about a minute each time. There was no break in between them though. I bit OH's chest!!!!! I took my shoes off, I crouched, stretched, kneeled, all sorts and I kept saying 'I didn't want to be really noisy but I can't control it'. The poor woman was quite concerned and asked how long it had been since I'd been seen as she couldn't believe how constant the pains were, and I remember her saying 'I've come out because I don't want to see my daughter give birth but Im going to end up watching you'. OH went to find a midwife and was told they were still prepping my room. Eventually ( after 10 mins) we were led into a room and I remember leaning over the bed, still with the same constant, encompassing pain. The lady who'd taken us there watched me for a min and went off to get the midwife.

The midwife came in and gave me the gas and air. I got straight on that and it allowed me to be able to climb onto the bed. She must've put a monitor on me but I don't recall this. The gas and air makes your mouth feel really dry so I kept sipping water too - take make sure you have some with you ladies. OH went to get my bag from the car, not sure why we hadnt taken it in the first place!! Meanwhile I told midwife I needed the toilet. She looked a little concerned and told me I had to be examined. She waited for the pain intensity to die down a bit then whipped off my trousers. OH came back in very red faced, must've run all the way! Midwife said 'stranger things have happened, you are 9.5cm!' At this point I think I called her a liar! I had only been at the hospital for half an hour!

She said I could push when I needed to so off we went. It took me a while to get the hang of it, I kept forgetting to put my chin to my chest. She said baby's head kept coming down as I pushed then going back in when I stopped. This carried on for a while then she pressed some sort of alarm I think. Another midwife came and then the next thing I knew a consultant appeared too. (I was quite oblivious to alot of this as I think I was a bit high off the g&a) The consultant stood back and watched everything, cool as a cucumber, for 5 mins, then he put my legs in stirrups, took the g&a off me (!!!) and they all coached my pushing. He said she needed to come out, her heartbeat was dropping with the pushes, they all talked and then, like an episode of casualty one off them was helping him into scrubs and putting these blue things over my legs. I didn't know what was going on, he just said, 'we're going to give her a little help getting out'. I was just looking at OH and he was encouraging me I could do it. The midwives and OH continued to coach me, the consultant apparently turned around with scissors in hand, and at that moment I remember a look of surprise on everyones faces as I felt baby come out. She was put straight on my chest but I still had my top and bra on as it had all happened so fast!

I was in a bit of shock I think! She was perfect. India Suzanne Keegan was born at 4:24am on 24/4/2011, weighing 8lbs 2oz and the most precious thing I had ever seen. I just looked at her for ages, while the consultant stitched me back together - this took almost as long as the pushing phase took (about 40 mins) and it was really uncomfortable. I have 2nd degree tears and it's pretty sore, but well worth it.

Within a couple of hours I was up and showered and sitting in the chair. The midwife said there were no beds and I'd have to wait in the delivery room for one to become free, they'd had a really busy night, or we could go home. So at around 9am we left hospital and came home with our perfect girl - who has not allowed us a wink of sleep since!

Breastfeeding is going great, night sleeping isn't, but all in all being a mum is everything I hoped it would be and more! She was well worth the wait! xx

Here she is x
