Not sure if I've posted in the correct section, after 3 losses in 10 months, we decided to go for private testing, which I'm found to have a high count of natural killer cells but also found to be a carrier of one copy of what's called MTHFR gene mutation. Does anyone have any experience of this gene mutation, as my specialist has told me, I'll need to be on higher dose of folic acid and aspirin whilst ttc, however I only thought you would take aspirin if blood clotting disorder was diagnosed or is it also something you take if having this gene thing?? Does anyone have this MTHFR gene thing? X x

Hi Keep,

Didnt want to read and run - really sorry but i have never heard of it. Has a google shed any light?

xx

Thanks cocker for replying, I appreciate it! Yes, I've googled away and all has become a little clearer, thank you for asking! Hope you're doing ok. X x

Google is God but can sometimes be my worst enemy lol!

Yes i am good thank you, keeping positive. Paid our clinic deposit yesterday and keeping up with the overtime at work lol! xx

The most important thing is to be on methylated folic acid- or folate. Not synthetic folic acid. MTHFR mutation means you can't methylate folic acid yourself, which is why you have to get the methylated form. Thorne makes a b12/Folate combo which is great.

Good luck, cocker, I hope all goes well for you. X x

Kholl, thanks so much for your advice. My specialist has put me on 5mg of folic acid, so that's wrong then isn't it? I need to take what you're suggesting? X x

It is wrong. You can't absorb that and need the methylated version. You should also be on B12 to aid absorption of the folate. Are they planning on doing anything about your high NK cells?

Hi mishi, thanks for your help. Can I ask you a few questions please about this ...

1. Should I not take folic acid at all?

2. Do you recommend any methylated tablets and how many mg do I need?

In regards to the natural killer cells, the specialist will put me on a medication plan of steroids and intralipid infusions when I next fall pregnant, whenever that may be and touch wood i do! to suppress the immune system.

Again, thank you for taking the time to help me! X x

Yes avoid folic acid completely, presumably it builds up as a toxin in your system since you can't absorb it. Strictly stick with the b12/folate combo!

I have no personal experiences, but I have read that genetics is often the reason why a woman might experience pregnancy loss. From what I know docs might recommend doing karyotyping or PGS NGS screening x
