Can't believe I finally get to post on this message board! Got so much to say, I hope I don't bore you too much!
Molly was born by c-section on the 28th July 2006 (8 days early) at 116am and she weighed 7lb 5oz. She was an elective section as she was still breech at 37 weeks after a failed ECV.
Went in thursday night to be checked over, really really nervous, blood pressure shot up to 173/108 so didn't atually manage to get any sleep prior to the op as had to be constantly monitored as the nurses thought I was going to fit, I kept telling them it was nerves but they were sure it was last minute pre-eclampsia so was a bit of a nightmare as had hourly blood pressure checks and visits from specialists! Ten o'clock the next morning they came to get me to take me to theatre, walked into theatre and couldn't believe how dated it was it looked like something out of the film "Saw"! They had problems with the canula and had to puncture me five times to find a vein...then they spent forty minutes trying to give me the epidural as my spine is buggered, it was absolute agony! As time went on I became increasingly less confident in the theatre staff! Finally got me sorted and my blood pressure dropped and I started to gag and couldn't breath which made me panic even more, felt like an eternity, honestly thought I was going to die, worse experience of my life, hated being paralysed and awake, thank god for the oxygen mask and the anthestist who managed to give me something that sorted it out sharpish! Felt so relaxed after this that I practically fell asleep on the table, didn't see Molly as I was dozing as they pulled her out and showed Daddy and didn't even notice that Daddy had left the theatre to get changed whilst the sewed me up which took ages, wound was actually bigger than expected about 25cm but dissolvable stitches and just looks like someone has drawn on me with a biro can't believe how neat it is, bloody amazing! Was up walking by the end of the day and was discharged on Sunday, how's that for a speedy recovery!
Alas that is not where it ends! Poor little Molly was full of mucus and had to have her stomach pumped on the second day as she couldn't feed and kept choking on the reflux, this was terrifying as she kept turning blue and had the midwives worried. She finally started to latch on but with her being early, the c-section and the fact that she hadn't latched on after the section we were behind and no colostrum was being produced. I went to a convalesence unit to relax for a bit and get some help with the breast feeding but help wasn't especially forthcoming, they said as long as she was latched on then she was fine and I was worrying for no reason. Only there for one night, the following morning I was bullied into keeping her latched on for nearly two hours as they told me I couldn't take her home if she lost too much weight, my nipples were bleeding, she was fretful and still no milk but they said as she had latched on for so long I could go home that day and was discharged three hours later. We had a long night where I let her latch on every three hours for over an hour and then walked her until she was exhasuted and fell asleep. The next morning on our first midwife visit I had to press the issue again about no milk and no wet or dirty nappies and was told it was normal but that she would weigh her just in case, she had dropped from 7lb 5oz to 6lb 3 oz and had to be rushed to hospital to the newborn unit where she had a pipe fed into her stomach and had to be fed hourly as she was so dehydrated, jaundice and poorly - I am absolutely fuming
All is well that ends well, the staff on the newborn unit were absolutely fantastic and we came home last night, they have got me in to a routine, showed me ways of encouraging milk flow and I am now expressing and topping her up with formula until both me and Molly can cope with the breast feeding again. She is a very quiet and content baby she now weighs 6lb 11oz and is well on the way to recovery but it was so scary for a while.
I am very happy to be home with my little one and I am enjoying motherhood imensely, I didn't realise I would feel like this. Me and my OH are closer than ever and I am so happy that I have a family of my own.
Thank you ladies for all your help and support through the pregnancy it has been greatly appreciated.
