So, I’m afraid this is a long one! Here is the story of Mollie Ivy's arrival, born on the 9th Aug at 7.10am weighting 7lbs 10oz. One day early and not the expected sex!

Monday – I was feeling grumpy and irritable and under the weather. Having twinges and a bit of dark yellow discharge. Started to wonder if things might be happening soon so started to worry a bit and arranged a few things to be brought forward i.e. my friend was going to re-fumigate the flat Thurs, but I re-arranged it to Tues just in case! Had my parents round and had a curry, but felt rubbish and spent all evening rocking on all 4s. Luckily I had my couples birth class this day!!

Tues – had constant period cramps and back ache. I gave up walking round the range to go on all 4s in the back of the car! Got LOADs done round the house - ? nesting or panic! Yellow discharge faded to nothing.

Weds 4am. Woken by irregular cramps. Didn’t feel like BH or period, more like IBS. Couldn’t sleep so got up and watched TV.
‘tightenings’ got more regular but I kinda ignored it! carried on with my day, but got hubby to drive me as they were getting quite uncomfortable. Picked my friend up and we went to bump and me, where even the MW said I looked uncomfortable!

Said to hubby when he picked me up at 3 that I thought this might be the start and he panicked lol, but he was supposed to go to the cinema. I packed him off to the cinema anyway and called my mum to warn her she might have to take Thurs off. My mum suggested I time the ‘tightenings’ I did and they were every 5 mins like clockwork, lasting 45s apart. They didn’t hurt though, as long as I kept moving.

Hubby came home from cinema along with whole family, which was a big mistake as I kept trying to wish the pains away! As soon as they left it got quite bad and by midnight I’d kinda gone in to shock, I was shaking uncontrollably, teeth chattering and felt really sick. Hubby wacked the TENS on me which helped and we tried to sleep (Didn’t happen – pain + little girl upstairs having a bad night + foxes =poor night!)

Thurs - So Weds – Thu no sleep. Mum came over at 6 am so poor hubby could get some sleep and I tried a warm bath (We called the birth unit at 2 am and they said have some paracetamol and a bath and call again when the pain is unbearable!) The bath was HORRIBLE, the contractions were so bad I lasted about 10mins before I was out and had the TENS back on.

Pains obv got much more painful as day went on, I kept trying to sleep but they were stull every 5 mins and not really lasting any longer! My daisy breathing was a life saver, and I spent all the time doing yoga or on my ball, refusing to lie down!

Eventually at 2 PM my dad got so upset at seeing me like this he forced hubby to call the MW co-ordinator, who took almost a hour to answer. She suggested we go to the local birthing unit to get assessed (Even though I wanted to give birth in hospital) We later discovered that everywhere was full except for the one room at the birth unit!

Got there, they examined me and she told me that the membranes were bulging and I was 4cm. She gave me a sweep and asked if I wanted to stay. I thought she meant just to clean myself up – when she told me I could stay to give birth I cried, I was convinced she was going to send me home!

She gave me a can of gas & air but I was a bit scared of it TBH! I did wait a few hours to use it and just used TENS.

So this carried on for hours, after the shift change I was examined again at 9pm, I’d only progressed by 2CM, I was gutted!. They kept struggling to find the babys HB (Later discovered that was cos of the calamine I’d been using!) but the good news was she was the right way round.

I was so tired by this point I could hardly hold myself up during contractions, so I had mum holding my G&A and hubby controlling my TENS! I really struggled to eat and drink anything and my BP & pulse shot up and they kept threating to transfer me to the hospital! I kept going and eventually got to the point where I wanted to push, so at 2 am they examined me again – only 8CM!

I really struggled not to push at this point so I stopped using G&A and breathed through it. To the point where the MW thought my contractions had stopped and wanted me to get off the ball and go for another walk. When I could explain that I controlled my urge better without G&A, they took it away !

The broke my waters at this point and OMG – I screamed at that contraction. That was the most painful bit, but things did speed up and in a few hours I was fully dilated.

Friday – I tried and tried and tried to push that baby out but I was exhausted. I tried on the stool for about 90mins before they made me get on the bed with my legs in stirrups. I had 2 MW helping and still wasn’t allowed any G&A. So all I had for the last 7 hours was my TENS and 2 co-dydramol!

Hubby was forcefeeding me red bull inbetween contractions to get my energy up. They prepped me for an epi as she had turned, but I didn’t need it in the end (But actually having a numb downstairs probably helped!) They kept shouting at me to get angry with my baby and come on you can push harder and I was crying my eyes out going I’m sorry, I can’t I can’t!

Then they decided to catheterise me as I’d not been able to pee for several hours. That was delighful.

My MW then decided I had to have help. She told me she was sending me to the hospital as I’d been pushing 2.5 H, she was off to prep the trolly and call an ambulance so I had to have the baby while she was gone. Plus they had lost babys heart beat – I didn’t learn this till after! And you know what, the threat bloody worked. I don’t know where I found the energy after being up since 4am Weds and a 50H labour but I managed to get her out – the very second the door opened to say the ambulance was here!

Phew!

But then they said – wait – don’t send the ambulance away shes torn badly and we might have to send her anyway! Luckily it was only 2nd degree.

I had to wait till shift handover to get stiched up as my poor MWs were exhausted.
And I made hubby double check the sex as I was convinced we were having a boy!! I also discovered after that she was born with her cord around her neck and body as she had turned over and over during delivery!

Sorry its so long but it was a LONG old labour. 50 Hours!! The good news was that I was discharged pretty quickly, they only kept me in 6H as my BP was so high. I eventually managed to convince them to send me home, which was good as my BP is still really high 2 weeks later (But I’m keeping that one quiet!!)

And – I wasn’t sick :D and I didn’t pooh myself either!
