Hi,

I had my 12 week scan yesterday. Today I have received a letter from the hospital with an appointment for a Modified Glucose Tolerance Test in December. There was no mention of this by the midwife yesterday and I've never had one before or in my last pregnancy. It says on the letter "Your midwife or doctor will have referred you for the MGTT in order to screen you for Gestational Diabetes after assessing clinical risk factors".
Does anyone know why I could have been referred for this? Also, why the appointment isn't until December, I would have thought if there were "clinical risk factors" the test would be performed earlier?

Thanks ladies xx

Hi Dee!

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I've not heard of the MGTT but I have had the GTT in all three previous pregnancies and will be having it again mid november.

Usual factors are weight.. ethnicity.. previous gd.. family history of diabetes. It's done at 28weeks. With the gtt you have to fast from around 7.30pm the night before.. you then have your blood taken the following morning.. then you have to drink a sugary drink something like lucozade original.. then 2hours later they take another blood test. Not sure how the mgtt differs.

Hope that's of some help! I'd have a word with your midwife to see what factors have led to the referral xx

Thanks for your reply crinkles, that is very helpful.

I am not overweight, no history of GD or family history of diabetes. I am British. I wonder if it has anything to do with the weight of my last baby? He was very large. Or could it be anything to do with having an emergency c-section? I'm intrigued now! Will be seeing my midwife in 3 weeks so will wait until then to ask her.

Thanks again xx

Ahh yes has a quick google large baby is another reason..

You're welcome Hun xx

My hospital introduced the 'glucose challenge' for every woman. So at your 28w appointment you do what is essentially a mini version of GTT and if you have high levels then you need a proper GTT.
