I am waiting to pick up a prescription for some Gaviscon but needed some straight away so thought I'd just buy a small bottle to tide me over. But when I got to the chemist all they had was bottles of Gaviscon Advance costing £7.40. I begrudge paying that when I know I have a bottle on the way for free so I looked at cheaper options - saw Milk of Magnesia and it said on the bottle for upset stomach and indigestion. I remember taking it as a child and liking it and at £2.50 thought 'that'll do me!' (cheapskate!)

When I got home I noticed it said 'consult doctor before taking if pregnant' but thought how different can it be from Gaviscon - surely all indigestion remedies have the same basic ingredients?? So I've been happily swigging away at it since yesterday. Noticed last night that my bowels were a little loose and was going loads....but thought nothing of it. But then tonight I have been up since 4am with lets just call it a VERY upset stomach!!

Have looked online at the use of Milk of Magnesia in pregnancy and have found out that it is in fact a laxative!!! Ooooops!!! And to make matters worse it's done bugger all for my indigestion and now I can't sleep cause of bad tummy as well as acid!! :wall2:

It doesn't really mention it is a laxative on the bottle - and def states it can be used for indigestion. But I can definitely vouch for the fact that it most definitely is a laxative!!! Ha ha! xxxx

oh dear - what r u like! on the gaviscon front if you are having to use it alot there is also some tablets you can ask your doc for. my friend was swiggin gaviscon by the bottle when she was pregnant and they gave her these one a day tablets which she swears were the best! just thought i'd mention them! ahw hope you get all back to normal and settle that tummy down soon - bless u!

Awwww lol. I can't stand that stuff!!!! Mum gave it to me when I was little and I spewed everywhere!

How's your tummy now? X

I think my tummy has settled a bit now, don't think there is anything left in there tbh!! Treeze that pill sounds interesting...I am thinking of visiting my GP because this acid is getting ridiculous and Gaviscon doesn't seem to be really helping much - and yes I am getting through ALOT of it!! xxx

I used to suffer from bad acid indigestion a few years ago because of meds I was on. The doc gave me lansoprazole - amazing wonder tablets lol. Bet pregnant ladies arent allowed them :eh:

amanda ask your doctor for ranitidine, it is an absolute god send. You can also buy it from a chemist/supermarket. Hope your feeling better x

Thanks am def gonna make an appontment today, can't be doing with this - every little thing I eat or drink is giving me acid and it stays around forever :-( xx

I've had heartburn from the word go. Doctor didnt even try me on gaviscon just gave me ranitidine straight away, but that might be because I was on lansoprazole last year for acid reflux

Doctor and consultant have said I can take them again now I'm in Tri 3 (I take them normally for my acid) as the Ranitidine I was taking was ineffective.
