I'm thinking about the Merina (sp?) coil as I hated the mini pill (combi pill not an option when BFing) and I find condoms a passion killer.

Anyone had it? I think it's the idea of it that puts me off......and I'm not sure how they work either

I had it put in during the summer and had a bad time with it. Having it put it wasn't painful at all. But I bleed constantly and it eventually fell out one night in the bath! Looking back this was a good thing as I'm ready to breed again now

my friend at work thou has one and thinks it great never had any problems

how strange! I just mentioned the marina in my thread. I've had 2 marina's, i don't have any problems with them at all, no periods, no mood swings, no nowt, just brilliiant. Bit uncomfortable getting it put in but once its there you can pretty much forget about it xx

I really wanted to go down the merina route about 18 months ago as I was sick of all the hormonal effects of the pill and thought my PCOS diagnosis might have been down to this but my GP really put me off, never gave any real reason why not to have it and just changed the pill I was on. Not sure what the reasons were, maybe because I hadn't had any babies yet, I don't know. tbh I've been thinking about contraception already, when these hips are up to it he'll not know what's hit him ;)

I had one put in, in 2007 and had it for over 2 years, the only problem i had was they cut the stings to short so every time i had to have a check it was still there, i got sent for a scan instead, in the last year of having it, i had some bad stomach pains and found out i had a cyst on my ovary but they cant be 100% if that was due to the coil or not, it was very painful for me having it out, although im a wimp when it comes to pain lol

I had a sligh bleed for my first period then nothing till i had it taken out

My friend had one fitted and she bled constantly with it, she nearly had to be knocked out to get it taken out too cos it hurt so much, BUT everyone is different!

I'm considering a coil for after we've had our LO - My friend has the implant in her arm. Can you still BF on that? She thinks it's amazing!

^^^ Just had a quick look on google - you can still BF with the implant so I might swing more for that option...

One of my friends friends fell pregnant with the coil in, im not sure which coil she had in tho!

I had the morena a couple of years ago.
I'm not allowed the pill as I had visually affecting migraines when I was younger, and I didn't want to trust myself taking something every day like the mini pill.

I must say it was the worst decision. Firstly I fainted after they put it in cause I was agony. Then I totally lost my sex drive, and its never really came back. I had full blown acne within a month, I put on a stone that has never gone (I think my metabolism changed) and I got mood swings. I looked online and found lots of people with exactly the same experiences. 3 years on, my skin has never got really back to normal, I never really shifted the excess weight and I cannot remember the last time I wanted to have sex sober. No kidding.

I know everyone reacts differently to these things, but I would seriously do some research into it. When I've spoken to doctors they've all said 'NO, those side affects don't happen with the Morena, but I feel differently, expecially after I found all the other women on the web. Just type Morena sex drive, or morena weight gain, or morena acne and see what comes up. I will never use any kind of contreception again except the durex kind. (Poor OH!)

And to top it all off, when I did get it removed about 3 months later, the nurse was my best friend in junior schools mum. CRINGE!

I have obviously sounded very negative here, and I'm sure there are lots of people whos had a easy ride (Scuse the pun!) for 5 years with it, just wanted to share what happened to me.

I haven't had one in post-baby, of course, but have posted elsewhere on this.

In brief, I found it very painful being put in (something to do with having wonky bits didn't help so ignore that part) and was told it wouldn't be as bad if I had a) normal "bits" and b) had had a baby.

I had spotting at "due on" times for the first month, but nothing more than a panty-liner worth which was amazing for me.

I spotted for 3 months (at normal due-on times)- light and barely noticeable to be honest - and then nothing.
No mood swings, no weight gain, no PMT, a more even-tempered me arrived on the scene. It was brilliant.

I have other issues though - and can't take the Pill, anything with hormones in it etc. and the Mirena was pretty much my last option. Despite the horrible pain having it put in initially, I'd go for it again. Wonderful contraception and you can breastfeed with it in as the progestogen only stays localised to the uterus area and doesn't flow around the body (an absolute must for me - can't have fake hormones in doses)

I'd say I had a very positive experience with it and despite the stories I've read elsewhere, it's by far the best option I've ever come across.

Hello,

I worked in a clinic where these were routinely used and they are a fantastic method of contraception. there are always people who couldnt tolerate it but that is the same with any medication. the progesterone that is released thins the lining of the womb so in most cases no more periods (although this can take some months to settle down) this thinning of the womb lining can also help prevent endometrial cancer.

When I had the coil fitted it was uncomfortable but only for a minute and I didnt feel it being removed.

I will deffo be having one when this bubba is born.

I had marena fitting in 99 and just removed in jan! didn't have any problems at all not one. no periods for over 10 years. no none swings weight gain but don't know for sure it was down to coil. . . can honestly say its been the best thing ever and would def have it in again in future! x
