Hiya!

My Midwife gave me a MatB1 form today, firstly what do I do with it once i've filled the bit on the back in and secondly ...

Because i'm self employed (Childminder) and only having a couple of weeks off once baby is born am I still entitled to any SMP? I though i'd have to actually be on maternity leave to get anything?

I'm a bit confused lol x

I don't think you get smp if your self employed. I could be wrong though. If you were employed you would give your mat b1 form to your employer and they photocopy it. I still have mine as they just copied it so I don't think you will have to do anything with it to be honest. X

I've just been onto the website on the bottom of the form and I can claim MA (maternity allowance) because i'm self employed. I think I have to send them half a ton of paperwork to show my earnings which will be fun! I'll get my OH to figure it out when he gets home from work!

Thanks though hun! x

yeah i was gonna say you should be able to claim maternity allowance instead...i think its effectively the same as smp but its got a different name lol

there are a few self employed ladies on here that seem to know what the deal is with it all...hopefully one will be along soon to help you :)

Oh yeah I forgot about maternity allowance. Yeah you should be able to get that. After all it's pretty unfair you can't get smp just cos your self employed. You work just like everyone else who is entitled xx

Yeah it defo looks like I can get maternity allowance which will help big time! I'm still confused though because the midwife gave me the form and it says at the top it's for claiming SMP or MA but then it says further down under 'maternity allowance' that I have to get a MA1 form when she gave me a MAT B1 form?! Confusing or what! Plus the fact that I earn a different amount of money every month depending on the hours the children are with me for!!

Hope I can get it sorted lol x

my employer wanted my matb1 rather than a photocopy of it. is this right?

No idea hun! I'm more confused than ever now! I'm seeing my MW again in 2 weeks so i'll chat to her about it all then. I don't think I can claim anything because i'm not having maternity leave.

x

I'm self employed-aslong as u pay national insurance they don't need any proof of earnings and ul be paid 124.88 a week. Ul need to fill the form out and send ur mat b1 off with it. I'm havin full 39 weeks off so not sure how it works if u only have a couple off-think ul just tell them how many weeks u plan on havin off x

Cheers Emma I was hoping you'd see this thread because I knew you were self employed! Where do I send both forms to? Once i've downloaded the MA1 form that is.

Guess i'll just fill it in and see what they say. x

U send it to local jobcentre office I think. There's a phone number on the form and they're really helpful-I rang them a few times cos the form just confused me lol x

They may want to see the original but I don't think they have the right to keep it - you may need it for free prescriptions etc

thanks for the response,

I've been using my exemption card for prescriptions etc and has been fine. I suggested photocopying it for them but they said they need the real thing. Whats the difference?! Ive taken 3/4 copies of it anyway for myself but still, i just dont like the idea of them having it. its mine :(

lol

Yeah mine took the original from me too. I don't think it's the correct form to use for free prescriptions anyway - that's something different altogether and you can get that as soon as you find out your pregnant where mat B 1 can't be given out till later xx

Yeah they need the original-some employers photocopy it and give it back, sone don't. I never got mine back from jobcentre after applying for mat allowance. Unless uve got more than 1 employer ul never need it again anyway x

Hi

I used to be a payroll manager before moving overseas, your payroll has to have the original of your MATB1 form - so its correct that they have kept it.
x

But my hubby's work need it as well - unless I turn into a magician and create 2 copies, can he just take a photocopy? xx

also, when are you meant to get this? I don't see my midwife until 28 weeks, the last time I saw her was 22 weeks. Everyone else seems to have an appt around 24/25 weeks!

Ul get it at ur next appt. Ur hubbys work will be fine with a photocopy-my hubby took the form into work and got it copied b4 i took it in xx
