Hi Ladies

I think I have mastitis! My left boobie is so painful, it's quite engored and I have a red area around it. Oh my gosh it hurts to feed from it

I also feel really achy and flu like (not good when you have a little one to look after).

I am percevering with the feeding but it really hurts and I am going to try and express from it as well. If it's the same on Monday I will go to the docs.

Gabriella hasn't been feeding as well (I think she is teething) so I am sure this is the cause.

Has anyone else had this? Any advice?

Thanks ladies

Hiya, try and get help today if can. keep feeding and expressing as this will help to clear it but you need medical help too!

oh dear Tina, sorry to hear your in such pain unfortunately I have no advice for you. Just hope it clears up soon and that both you and Gabriella start feeling better soon!

I had it Tina, its terrible :(

Feed from that breast but express too, I was told to continually empty it. You can take paracetomel but go to the doc ASAP otherwise it can become localised and you can get an absess that needs to be cut out. They also told me to massage it in the shower but not on the direct area, take your boob and turn it in circular motions if you know what I mean. If you can see a doc tomorrow you should

Thanks guys, I appreciate your help.

I have been expressing from it and feeding but I dread feeding from it; it actually makes me cry out (poor Gabriella).

I will try the massage technique as well but if it's not better tomororw I will try and contact the doc. It's horrible. :(

Oh honey, that sounds so painful. I know you were struggling on Thursday when I saw you. Sounds like a good idea to go to the docs asap. Hope you start to feel better soon.

Tina I don't think it does clear up on its own! Mine was better in less than 24 hours after starting the medication. I caught it really early but if you have had it since Thursday I'd try and see a doc today if I was you

It was just a sore nipple on Thursday. DH is at work and has the car so it is really awkward for me to get out :wall: :wall:

My other boob has become engorged now and I am struggling to express anything from it and Gabriella is not feeding from me (vicious circle) I tried her on a bottle of EBM but she refused that as well; she just screams; I think it is her teeth. I am worried about her; she can't not eat. I am going to ring the docs for some advise; why does it have to be the weekend?

Thanks again for your advise and support everyone

I spoke to nhs direct and they advised me to call out of hrs doc; which I did and he said I should be ok until tomorrow; so i'll be going to the docs first thing.

I had this, try and express to releive pressure, hot flannels and go to the docs tomorrow and they should give you antibiotics that are safe to take and keep bf'ing , also i found using a wide toothed comb to massage the ducts really helped!

i had this once too tina.
Keep feeding bubba and while he feeds massage your boobs from top to teat ( ) to help any blocked ducts etc.
i would go to your doctors ASAP and get prescribed anti biotics if necessary becasue mastitis can turn very nasty very quickly.
The one thing to remeber though is to keep feeding bubba. it will help.

i was advised to sit in a hot bath too with warm flannels on my boobs - i hope you resolve it soon.

Hi Ladies

Just to update; I rang NHS Direct and they advised me to contact my out of ours doctor asap. I contacted them and they told me to get to A & E because I had it since Friday night and their was a risk of infection spreading (The DR told me off for leaving it so long  ). DH Was at work so my lovely friend Emmerdale took me (DH met me there) I Felt like such a fraud going to A & E for sore boobies.
They were really good though and did a blood test and confirmed that my boob was infected, I was given antibiotics and have to go back to the breast clinic on Tuesday. The one thing that confuses me is I have always heard that you should continue feeding bubba from the breast but I was advised not to because of the infection; I was told to feed her from the one only and express from the other whilst I have the infection. It makes sense and I don't want to pass anything onto Gabriella but I also don't want my supply to dry up.

My other boobie has become a bit engorged, so I am massaging away, having hot baths and using hot flannels. Hopefully it will all be gone soon.

Thanks for all your advice and support

Hi Tina

I'm glad you have received treatment for the mastitis.

I'm not convinced about the advice they have given you not to feed from the infected boob - your milk will be the same out of one boob as it is out of the other! In your situation I would call your local La Leche League breast feeding counsellor (helpline is 0845 120 2918)
just for a 2nd opinion on the feeding from one side only.La Leche league in particular have a lot backing that enable them to research into this a lot more and have a great deal of specialist knowledge that in my opinion is far better than some NHS text book taught docs.

Hope you're feeling better soon

Lucy

I was also told to continue feeding from the boob and it wouldn't effect Leorah because she would have been having the same milk anyway :?

yes you should continue feeding buba from both boobs.

Hi Ladies

I got some advice from a BF counsellor today and she said to continue feeding from the breast; she is contacting the hospital as well to make a complaint as I am the 2nd person who has been given bad advise.

I thought I should continue feeding from it but the DR scared me by saying I could pass the infection on, I wouldn't have been able to forgive myself if I had.

I feel so much better today; so the antibiotics are obviously working and I am feeding from both breast.

Take care all

Glad you are feeling better now.

Bad advice is why so many people fail to continue breast feeding. :x :x

I think they probably treat it like thrush when it is not the same in any way it wont be passed onto baby, the only reason they knew what it was, was because of the blood test, a bf councellor wouldnt even of done a blood test to know what it was so they just say, oh its infected ummm (something safe to say) um dont feed from that breast, because they really dont know wether you should or shouldnt.

glad its sorted xx
