Making up bottles

Yeah you can Hun x

Some people prefer to add the powder to the bling water and leave to cool x as long as its in th fridge it should be fine. You can reheat as you need it x

Hi Lizzie

By my understanding the point of boiling the water is so that it is added to the formula when it is still very hot (at least 70 degrees C) so that it kills any bacteria in the formula. (Otherwise there would be little point in boiling the water when LOs are over 6 months as they can have water from the tap then anyway).

So water should be boiled, left to cool for no more than 30 mins (so it stays over 70degrees) and then the formula added straight away. The NHS advice is that it is best to do this as each bottle is needed, but it seems most people are saying this isn't always practical.

The next best thing is to boil the kettle, cool for 30mins or less, add formula and then chill the made up formula - it can then be re-warmed prior to using if needed. (If you boil the water and then let it cool completely before later adding the formula, any bugs in the formula would not be killed). I found this advice on the NHS choices website which I've put the links for earlier in this thread - it gives you tips on what to to when you're out and about. Hope that helps - it made sense to me.

For feeds during the day when im at home i boil the kettle about half hour before ds's feed is due, let it cool for 15mins, make up the bottle, give it a good shake and cool down to desired temp.

For going out and early morning feeds i put boiling water from kettle into a flask (stays hot for 6hours+) put the powder into a powder dispenser and have a clean empty bottle and just pour in the water from flask, put powder in and shake a cool.

i tend to put cold water from the kettle into a bottle when i need a feed and then boil the kettle and add 1 oz of boiling water. i have a cuppa in the morning so the water was boiled earlier already. that way its the perfect temperature and quicker than cooling or warming things up as i can then add the formula straight away and give to baby

I have FF from day one and have always used the following method and so far in 6 months not poisoned my DD.

Before bed I make up 3 bottles with just water and leave them on the side. These are used for first bottle of the day and mid morning plus one spare.

During the morning I make up 3 more for the rest of the day, again just water and they are left out on the side.

When she needs a feed I add powder and then heat up.

Excuse the typos, phone has mind of its own.

We sterilise all of the bottles and fill them with the boiled water ready, so we can just mix up when we need them. We've been quite lucky in that Charlie took to having cold bottles from the off so we don't need to worry about warming them.

I feel a bit naughty now. After he's had his bath and gone to bed, i boil the kettle and fill a jug to fill 4 bottles of boiling water. let it cool and add formula.
Let the bottles go to room temperature and put the ready made bottles in the fridge, just put them in microwave on defrost setting for 2 mins for a more gradual heating & less risk of hot spots.
I've been making up bottles the night before since he was 3 weeks old and he's 5 months now, and never been ill or poisoned.
Personally i think the guidelines are far too strict, and a little bacteria is always a good thing to help immune system, but im a tough nut who can't be doing with the fancy dancy strict "make the bottle when you need" moto.

when i go out, i boil the kettle, leave it to cool, use a plastic bottle to carry the water, and little formula pots to carry the correct amount of formula for each bottle (there like stacked pots?). Take a few empty bottles and make up a bottle when needed but usually these are emergency supplies, i take 2 bottles straight from the fridge to use if i'm going out one heated ready to cool down within the next 2-3 hours when he'll be needing a feed.

Like i said these are really naughty ways to go about it, if health visitor knew I'm sure i'd be scorned, but like i said, it works for me, and my son is perfectly healthy, and his guts perhaps are getting used to the tiniest amount of bacteria.

HTH. xx

I boil kettle and then fill a thermal flask after 30 minutes then i have got water on demand for the rest of the day so when my son wants a bottle. I make one and either warm up in microwave or cool down depending on how hot the water is out of flask x

Also i take flask out with me and a spare scoop and little kids knife with formula in a plastic container x else i get ready made if desperate x

the guidelines are strict cos some silly ppl premade too many bottles and were using them way after the 24 hr mark and obvs babies got sick, if your sensible about it then there is only a small risk to baby from pretty much any way you make up the bottles

Does ne1 who uses aptimil premix & refrigerate? You can also buy from tommee tippee little containers you pop in the bottle with the powder in so u can measure out b4 u leave house and just mix web needed. X

I do Andrea x
