Do you think it's likely that people will shorten William to Willy? My older son is Zachary and people sometimes call him Zach even though we never introduce him as such.

I don't mind any of the other nicknames for William, just that one. It's really bugging me though!

I think people would most likely call him Will.. Kids at school is a whole other story, the Willy jokes would 100% come out. I love the name though xx

Probably more likely to be Will, my hubby is a William and everyone calls him Will...with the exception of one neighbour who calls him Bill and always has done! Xx

My sons a William but we purposely shortened it to Billy to avoid Willy lol!

The 3 William's I know are all Billy's. I can't see it being shortened to Willy if I'm honest. I think 95% of it is what you call them so they use that :) xx

Thanks everyone. :)

I am wary of the playground jokes, but I guess it can't be that bad. It's a fairly common name after all and I don't hear of people saying they had a horrible time at school because of it. Besides, kids will make something embarrassing out of any name lol.

My son is called William but when he was smaller we called him Wullie (out the broons ha) but its now Wull and all his friends call him Wull too but because William and Kate got married etc he gets called William at times too. Never once been called Willy or Billy.

If you plan to keep it William all the time without shortening then its what people will call him, but cos we shortened it hes always Wull. Its a good strong name I think but im biased lol. Hes 11 now and loves his name and hopes to marry someone as pretty as Kate...bless xx

I know an adult William and he has always been Will or William.

A good, strong name but we couldn't use it as he is my OH's best friend!

X

Sorry I wasn't laughing at the name. Was laughing at the "I hate willy" comment. Told you, immature x

One of my pet hates is people shortening names (like Zachary to Zach) of their own accord. I always use the full name of anyone I know, unless they introduce themselves as a different name. I used to go out with 'Andrew' who hated being called 'Andy', always introduced himself with his full name, but people just assume he's 'Andy', so i think it's quite rude lol. But, that aside, i don't think you need to worry about people using 'Willy', unless they are taking the mick in the playground etc, and kids will find an alternative for any name!!

I have known three Williams. One only ever introduced himself as William and hated it being shortened so no one ever called him anything else. The other two were both known as Billy for the most part, although one of them did refer to himself as Will every now and again.

As flutey says, one of my pet hates is when people take it upon themselves to shorten someone's name without their permission.
I had a friend called Elizabeth who HATED being called Liz as an adult but when she was a kid everyone called her that so all her old school friends and her family always called her Liz and all her adult friends and work colleagues would call her Elizabeth lol
