I went in to get induced on Monday 9th May at 3.30pm - after examination I was told I was still 2cm long and my cervix was posterior, so in went the prostin. 6 hours later was checked and exactly the same, so in went another. Slept ok save a few loo trips, but no change really.
Next morning got took round to delivery at 10.30am where they managed to break my waters (pierce is probably more accurate, they just leaked out leisurely over the next few hours) despite being only 2cm and still posterior. Got hooked up to the drip and slowly the contractions started. I had been looking forward to feeling what these were like the whole pregnancy but they were not at all what I expected - I expected a general bump tightening and squeezing feeling but instead it just felt like a localised period pain, and as they got worse it was still just like a really intense period pain.
Tried the tens machine but eventually had to admit it was just really irritating so ditched it, but I LOVED the gas and air - great stuff! Contractions progressed over the next few hours, to the point where they were really hurting - I was hooked to the drip and monitor for baby, so couldn't get moved round much, but stayed on my feet and even cracked wheeling my equipment to loo so I could go to the loo without a hoard of midwives. I had already decided I wanted an epidural, and was told I could either have one at 2pm (before the planned c section) or when the anaesthetist came out from the section, so I decided to wait till he came out after it, but at about 2.30-3.00pm he still hadn't gone in yet and I decided to have it then rather than wait and spend the whole time moaning and wishing I'd got it done earlier . Getting it in was fine, though it took two attempts as first time he hit a vein, and the relief from it was amazing. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I can't imagine going through 8 more hours of the level of relentless pain I was in before I got it - it wasn't terrible kill me now pain, and just waves rather than constant, but the non-stopness of it was so exhausting! You just so want like 5 minutes to chill out!
So, epidural at 3.30pm, got checked and was still a sad old 2cm. They tried to get the clip on baby's head as the monitor was being a bit on and off, but after rooting about for ages, they had to give up. Lazed about in bed watching True Blood and consultant came to see me at 5.30pm - was still 2cm, so she said that if there was still no progress by 9.30pm I would need to have a section as not good for baby to be hanging about. Since I'd not moved from 2cm all day and was on a good whack of the drip, I'd pretty much accepted I'd be getting a section, so when they came at 9.30pm for the last check/to take me down, and we discovered I was 9-9.5cm we were pretty shocked!
They left me to go the last bit, and at 10.15pm I started pushing. Pushing was weird since I couldn't really feel the contractions or know where or how to push, but push I did and apparently it worked because when I was pushing they could see her head. She had the cord around her neck though, so midwife asked if she could cut me to help her out. Said yes obviously, so she did and shortly after at 10.53pm my baby girl came out (weighing 7lb 5oz) and was put on me. It was lovely and we had skin to skin and hubby cut the cord, but then started noticing a lot of whispering and people appearing at the bottom of the bed - they said they were there to repair the cut and I was pretty whacked off the birth and overwhelmed with baby so just let them get on, but then baby was taken off me and I started feeling a bit weird(er), and time kind of blurred a bit.
It turned out that as well as my cut - which wouldn't stop bleeding - I also had two second degree tears, and my uterus hadn't contracted back down but remained "boggy" (a great term I feel!) which meant it just kept on bleeding, so I lost quite a lot of blood (1500ml). They were stitching me until 1.45am-ish though most of it was a blur, the tops of my legs started really hurting near the end and I was freezing and started going a bit weird and demanding my legs be taken out of the stirrup things. I'd had nothing to eat since 6.30am (a bowl of cornflakes) so think that didn't help.
Got taken around to High Dependency Unit and strapped up to weird machines on my legs and blood pressure and horrible drips, but managed to give Lily a feed at 2.30am and then was allowed back to my own room on Post-natal ward the next morning.
Stayed in hospital a while but was keen to get out (possibly too keen - on reflection another day might have been a better idea) and came home Thursday afternoon. We have had a few problems with breastfeeding but we are managing ok at the minute.
Here is my little gorgeous girl!
