Hi everyone,
We got back from the hospital yesterday so thought I'd write up my birth story. Before I start I just wanted to say thank you for all the help and support while ttc and over the last 9 months, plus all the well wishes over the last couple of days.
So me and my hubby, Mike, had planned a lovely calm hypnobirth and although it didn't work out I Feel that hypnobirthing meant we dealt with everything really calmly. I can't recommend hypnobirthing enough, it took all my fears of labour away and meant I was excited about the birth. It also ensured mike felt really included in the whole process, which was great. Although my birth wasn't great, I still feel positive about it.
On Wednesday I went to the docs who told me I was 2-3cm dilated so I decided to have a sweep done, which made me lose a lot of plug and feel very crampy. Thurs nothing really happened. Friday morning I woke up with strong cramps and started to get excited. This went on all day with mild contractions so me and hubby just pottered around. By 7:30pm the contractions were getting stronger and regular, although I was still able to breathe through them easily. I phoned the labour ward and they told me that I would know when I needed to come in lol. By 2am the contractions were stronger and closer together, although they never got to 1min, and I did know that I needed to go to the hospital. I was still managing to breathe through the contractions but they were getting tougher.
When we got to the hospital I was examined and was 7cm dilated. An hour later I was 8 cm dilated but the contractions were tough. I tried the gas and air but it didn't do much to help and made me feel more nauseous so the midwife recommended I get in the shower ( they don't have pools here). The shower really helped take the edge of the pain and was much better than the gas and air. At 7am I was examined and hadn't progressed past 8cm. The midwife also believed the baby was back to back and would be a few more hours coming out. I had been in active labour for 12 hours, was knackered and in a lot of pain so decided to have the epidural. Which I must say was great and I managed to get some sleep.
Before I went to sleep the midwife broke my waters and put me on the drip to move things along. Then at 11am I started to push. The baby ended up in distress and I needed an episiotomy plus the ventouse before he was born at 12:23 pm on the Saturday. Baby Leo was whisked straight off to be resuscitated, which was the scariest 2 mins of my life! And meant no delayed cord clamping. But the moment we heard him cry was the best moment of my life.
So although we got absolutely nothing we wanted on our birth plan, lol. I feel that hypnobirthing helped me stay at home till 7cm dilated and get through the first 12 hours of a back to back labour with no pain relief. It also meant that despite everything, we maintained a calm atmosphere. And although baby Leo had a traumatic entrance, he is so chilled out, it's amazing! He took a day or so to get the hang of breastfeeding but is now at it like a champ! My episiotomy is healing well and I'm feeling pretty comfortable and well. Me and Leo are just snuggling on the sofa while I type this essay, sorry it's so long! I'll attach some pics in a minute. Thanks for reading x
