How soon will a baby start showing a preference for right/left hand? And does it run in the family?

Austin always reaches out with his left hand, and when he's eating he always prefers to put food in his mouth from his left hand. I thought it was much too early for him to start showing a preference, is this just a stage?

My mum and niece, and OH's dad and brother are left handed, does it run in families or is it a random occurrence?

When Willow was tiny she used to grab with her left hand but as of late she seems to suck her left thumb and grab things with either hand, but she will only suck her left thumb.

the only left handed person in our familys is my brother in law.

i would really like Willow to be left handed as not sure why.

Bray is ambredextrix (spl) like me somethings he uses his rite others his left

Aimee seems to prefer her left hand and holds a crayon or spoon much better in that hand. I think its too soon to tell but from a very young age my nan always told me Jess was left handed and I always ignored her saying it was to soon to tell but she IS left handed now. I don't know any one else in our family thats left handed so I think it would be quite strange to have 2 kids that are left handed.

Keeley wil hold things with both hands but to eat she uses her right hand... :D

Dylan uses his right hand to grasp things but its too early to tell I think.

Me too. left-handed people are supposed to be more intelligent than rightys  . The only one in my family is my youngest brother.

Left handed people are more artistic, more able to think on their feet and more practical than we righties.

Naomi does things more with the left hand too and I hope she's a southpaw, but my brother thinks differently. He's left handed and he finds that everything is oriented for the righty part of the population. However there's a good chance that Naomi will be lefty as my grandmother, two aunts and my brother as well as OH brother are all lefties. Oh brother started out as a lefty and had it beaten out of him in school - all that nonsense about the sinister side.

Here's a fun fact.

Sinister is the latin for left, dexter is the latin for right. So when you say someone is ambidextrous you really mean they have two right hands. I wonder does that mean they have two left feet? :rotfl:

I think this is prejudice against left handed people - why don't we say that people who can use both hands are ambisinistrous instead?

GO LEFTY RIGHTS! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Sue

Sam uses both.

Beth is right handed & Tom is left, they do say that twins tend to be one of each, strange :D

My mom was also a leftie :D

My dad was telling me about that last week, he'd watched a programme about it. I think its very interesting :D

I have no idea with Libby, i know she attacks my glasses with her left hand

My health visitor said that a child usually has a dominant hand by the time they're 18 months. None of mine did and she said they would probably use the 2 hands - the elder ones are 4 and 5 and although they both write with their right hands they swap and change hands doing everything else.

We are still trying to work out if Ellie will be left or right handed. She keeps switching in which she favours, but I think she will be Left handed (or maybe I just hope she will be). I am left handing, my mums sister is and my mums Dad was left handed. Though I have absolutely no artistic talent what so ever. However Hubby is very talented yet is right handed.
