I wonder if any one can share any of there experiences, Layla ended up back in hospital when we were on holiday as she had sickness, very runny poo and rash again. we have now been told she has a lactose intolerance.

Bit of back ground

Layla was born 5 weeks early, she has always brought up a fair amount of her formula after feeding and was demanding 90ml feeds every 2 hours, she didn't settle at night and after feeding would get rashes over her chest, back round her mouth and eyes would puff up. She always has runny poo and colic. We have been to hospital at home a few times and spoke to health visitors, doctors etc all said we were over feeding and give her 70mls every 4 hours we tried this and ended up with a very distressed baby no sleep for a week and same problems with sick etc. We changed from sma formula to cow and gate she was ok for a few days but still had sickness runny tummy etc, we then went on holiday and she got worse with rash etc, took her to a gp who said it looked like a lactose intolerance and sent us to hospital, when we got there they asked to see her feed and saw the rash etc appear and specialist said has no one picked it up before, she has been on special formula for almost 2 weeks and is a different baby going 4 hours before feeds, solid poo no rashes, settled and sleeps through most of night waking once for feed!

Our one problem is doctors here don't want to agree she needs the formula we have to have review but they said its to early to tell she has a lactose intolerance?? If she dosen't why such a change in her im confused!!!

maybe because preemies have more difficulties at the beginning with lactose anyway? maybe they think that they should try again when her digestive system is more mature and see how it goes before they class it as lactose intolerance yet?
can you get the special milk without a prescription?

tegan is lactose intollerant, she was 4 months old before she was diagnosed, she was sick all the time, had awfull nappies, screamed nearly all day everyday, covered in eczema and didn't gain weight very well at all.
she was breastfed so the dietician suggested i cut out all dairy products and she was like a different baby!

we then moved onto SMA lactose free formula and she's been fine ever since, she now 9.5 months old and were trying to reintroduse dairy.

Can you ask to be refered to a peaditrician at your local hospital?
as they should be able to get your gp practice to prescribe the formula if not you can buy it from boots.

any more questions just ask xx

thank you ZMD Layla sounds like tegan was she also has eczma as well, how was tegan diagnosed in the end? I haven't heard of sma lactose free. I have managed to get gp to prescribe formula they will only give enough for two weeks, if i go to gp can i ask to be refered to a peaditrician? I cant get over change in Layla

Im convinced my LO was lactose intollerant, he was the same, with throwing up all the time, massive problems with colic and the most hurrendously stinky runny nappies, OMG I know they all smell but when my mum was shocked by the smell I knew it was bad cos shes childminded for over 20 years and changed a fair few nappies in that time! Our GP said the same, its impossible for a child to be lactose intollerant as theyre too young. So we ended up spending £12 per week of colief drops and buying aptimil comfort (lactose reduced) milk, it cost us a fortune, but Iknow mummies in other areas get it all on prescription. I hate my GP, actualy hate!

yes you can ask your gp to refer you, i did as i was fed up with being fobbed off with them saying it was reflux and colic! she used to scream for hours at a night and was the worst sleeper at night ever! i hope you get sorted soon, what milk have they given you? x

Hi I haven't posted in a looong time! ZMD how's Tegan doing?!
Henry was readmitted to hospital at a week old, after a week being there he was diagnosed as being either allergic to milk protein or lac intolerant. He was put on special milk and has been fine ever since! Thus has been on repeat prescription since then and still is! I would get referered to a paediatrician ASAP!
The milk change makes a great difference. And its nonsense that she's too young Henry was a week old and they worked it out! We are now trying to reintroduce stuff-ZMD how are you getting on with this?

hiya lucy was diagnosed as cows milk intolerant at about 3 weeks old. she was grumpy and a bit sicky but i put that down to being a baby! didnt know any different then one day i noticed blood in her nappy from her bum. without being crude when she farted it was like strawberry jam!. i got her to a and e straight away with the dirty nappies and was then seen by the paediatrician who said the blood in the nappies was a classic sign and i must say she was a different baby after she started on the neocate, she has been on it since. you should have a discharge letter from the hospital which will highlight what the doc thinks and the gp should honour that especially if little one is better. why do they make it difficult!! just keep fighting your case and youll get there xx
