IVF

Lisey has pretty much summed it up in a nutshell! They do say 3 months for acupuncture but a month before also is really beneficial. I wouldn't recommend paying for a lap, and you should find that all of the investigatory work is covered by the NHS, to my knowledge 'stage 2' funding has not been cut anywhere (which is what it comes under) and stage 3 (which is when you actually start IVF) is the area that you would need to pay - but again, it varies by area and circumstance so def check that out.

I'm starting 'hopefully' in April, if they cant fit us in then it will definitely be the May cycle so keeping everything crossed for April!

When I looked into Acu I looked at local people that specialized like Lisey said and then went on price - there wasn't much in it but even £10 here or there when you have it regularly soon builds up - it's usually between £40 -55 for an hour and a bit more for your first consultation. I pay £42 a session and paid £50 on my consultation. The key is finding someone you like, and trust and can work with.
Hi 1sttimer, I have only just noticed this response, I did think a couple of days ago I hadn't had a response from my IVF buddy so just come onto check :-)
I am hoping for you to get started in April. I have my appointment this week, I just cant wait to get on with it now, AF due Friday and I can feel it will be arriving as I am so in tune with my body. I will give you a full update on my appointment later this week. Partner just rang me, is best friend pregnant again, this is the second baby since we been trying.
When do you find out if you can start April? Do you have to start on CD 21?
I am looking into acupuncture now as we speak, I am going to go for it, I am willing to do anything to make it work, also I don't know about you but I feel much more positive when I feel I am doing something about it / or to help, like some days I can get really down but even when I have a blood test or something it makes me feel better like something is happening x

Yes, your absolutey right, always feel so much better to be taking some kind of action however small that may be! I have to call the clinic on day 1 of my next cycle (around 2nd April) and then they'll tell me if they can fit me in that month. If so they'll tell me to start taking the contraceptive pill then book me in for drugs teaching before giving me my down regs to start on day 21. So far so straight forward haha! I have acupuncture tomorrow and will book in again every 2 weeks leading up to it. But my acupuncture lady is pregnant (oh the irony) so she disappears in June so hoping something happens before that otherwise I'll have to start again with someone else xx

How did you get on with your appointment!?

So I had my appointment today, very interesting, she said there is no waiting list so can get on with it and to await paperwork from her secretary, apparently from now until potential bfp (if it worked on first cycle) will be 3 months as paperwork etc takes a while, was that the same with you?
She also has forbid me to carry on exercising like I do, I do cross fit, not on a serious level & only about 3 times a week and i run and she said I can't do it anymore, I can only do light stuff like walking or swimming, I had no idea I shouldn't be doing lots of exercise when ttc, I thought it would be a plus to be keeping healthy. She also said the best vits to take are proxeed women and proxeed plus for men so I have ordered us both some of them.

Got my acupuncture consultation booked as well, but my fertility specialist today didn't seem to think it was necessary but I am going to do it anyway. Has your consultant said acupuncture is recommended?

hi hopefulmum, that's ace! So you can crack on! Brilliant. 3 months sounds about right, the best piece of advice I can give you at this stage is to never take timings too 'literally'. In our desperation we tend to take count things out exactly.. and it just doesn't work like that so 'try' and be breezy and you'll approach the whole thing with a much better frame of mind. But yes that sounds about right. Exercise I've been advised by my acupuncturist is great for releasing all the right relaxation hormones and getting the heart rate up to ensure good blood flow to all the right areas, but anything exhausting or heavy can have a detrimental effect so they always say tone it down. I do 10 mins a day on a rowing machine just to get the blood pumping a bit and that's it now. Everything in moderation I suppose.

When it comes to acu, consultants can really vary. They are all scientists at the end of the day so the science is their priority. Some (like mine) are really open minded to the idea that other therapies can compliment the scientific process and that acu etc can be really helpful. Others are just old school and a little dismissive... I say go for it. It cant harm. The two should work together very well. No good acupuncturist is going to cause a problem - only enhance your well being and help you relax if nothing else which has to be a good thing! I saw mine yesterday in fact having had a break from it for a few months and it was a breath of fresh air. Made me realise I've been missing it. Plus they are so informative about things you don't want to ask the consultants so good just for the info as much as anything x hope that helps!!

1sttrimester - thank you :-)
Not long now until you find out if you can start in April, I am excited to hear for you as well :-)
Noticed your smoothie receipe in another thread, I'm going to give that one ago!
One question I forgot to ask at my appointment was what makes twins so common in IVF? xx

Sorry hopefulmum!! I've only just seen this for some reason! You've likely had this answered now but incase you haven't - when an egg splits to create identical twins during IVF they don't know the answer, but it is more common. When it comes to non-identical that's just more common because when people opt to have 2 embryo's put back there is an increased chance that both will stick. How many you have put back (if you have a choice) is a big decision though and they will explain it to you in full detail. They also give you the option based on a recommendation from them so when I was going to do it I just worked on making a decision based on the experts opinion. The reason for having 1 or 2 can really vary on things like, whether it's your first go, how you've responded, grade of eggs etc. Hope this helps!
