I'm looking for some advice...

This is our 3rd IUI (one natural, one HCG shot). I had a scan today which showed the follicle is ready. I'd prefer not to have the shot as I have mild PCOS so I swell a bit and got sore last time. So basically I'm waiting for a positive opk then I have to ring them to get a slot to go in

But my consultant is on holiday and a different nurse has given me the instructions. She says I should take the HCG as soon as I get a positive, and that if it's a natural positive then they will bring me in the following day for treatment. But if I don't get a smiley by wed I take the HCG to make sure we can do the insem on Friday

But our last natural cycle the timing was the same whether ot was natural or with a HCG (36 hrs) so I don't know why this one would be different. When I questioned it she went to check but said that's what they always do... I've had some confusion before over wht time of day to do the opk and wondering if it's related to that (like if you test in the morning the surge was probs started the day before so that's why they say the following day? But if it's the afternoon then it would be the day after?) but she's said if I get a positive at bedtime they would bring me in tomorrow which seems way too soon?? They don't do many IUIs and I'm worried they're mixing it up with IVF or something

I also don't really understand why I need to take the HCG if I get a natural LH surge either...

Has anyone else had experience of IUI? I don't want this one to fail over crossed wires about timing!!

We didn't do IUI but I ovulate 4-6 hours after my positive ovulation test, so going in 36 hours later would be useless for me. My non professional view point is it is better for the sperm to be there waiting for the egg rather than waiting for the egg to pop and then trying to get the sperm there.

As for taking the hcg, it is possible for the LH surge to happen and the egg not release (especially common with pcos ladies), this will just ensure that the egg does pop.

Good luck.

That makes sense thanks. I didn't think about the PCOS. My fear was missing it but I think the timing was ok in the end, it was the speediest that let us down! DH has really good quality but the volume is often so low we get a low count. For this IUI we had around 700,000 put in so I'm not holding out much hope...I was so upset and disappointed

I'm wondering whether we should just move straight onto IVF, I'm just nervous about all the meds and that I will probably over respond because of my age and PCOS. How did you find yours?

hi I'm sorry to hear your struggling.. myself and my wife did IUI. blessed to have it work 1st time.. I'm 30 weeks. we had a window of february only. had we have missed then due to work ( both self employed) we would have had to wait another year before attempting no2.

I was 32 ( 33 now) so i was hesitant it would work. my cycle is regular 28 days.. my first day was 1st feb we had discussed waiting that year due to heavy work load so was unsure if to even attempt out cheeky go. however on the last minute we got the ovulation kit. i think i tested on the 9th. no smiley. 10th i did early morning no smiley.. then saturday i had a peak smiley.. so in-between 5am friday and saturday 9am i had my first surge. we rang the fertility clinic who had us in the sunday 12th. and presto it was a success. i hope that gives u a indication in timescale on surges.

and we even thought sunday would be too late giving that potentially the saturday smiley face was the 2nd day of peak. good luck and if you want anymore info let me know

I'm 35. We had ok sperm so did ovulation induction for 7 cycles (I had negotiated 12 cycles total, 9 of clomid and 3 of letrozole) and were successful on cycle 7 of clomid.

I have loads of eggs, mainly as I hardly ever release them! The egg quality was also ok so I wasn't too concerned about things from that point of view.

I have my fingers crossed for you, good luck.

Wow that's so lucky to fall on your first attempt! It's good to know there was that gap before they did it and it still worked so I'll worry about the timing less now I think.

It's just a waiting game now! I'm on dpo10 so the HCG will have about left my system by now but this month I'm just going to wait and not bother with early testing as it just gets my hopes up and down! Especially with this month's sample having so few sperm i think I've come to terms with it not working. I've booked an appt with the consultant to review DH's figures as they seem a bit up and down so we'd like to freeze a good count to use in September if on the day that ones not wonderful.

Congrats on your BFP! :)

The count was really low due to low volume so I had basically no hopes for that cycle and didn't even take a test. We went ahead and got some spermies frozen for next month.

But then in the meantime AF only arrived for one day(maybe because I'd stressed myself out about it?) and been opk testing and had 5 days of LH surge (I normally get 2, 3 if catch it early)

What's worse is mg best friend just got pregnant and even though she knows we've been trying for 3+ years she's been complaining about the inconvenience of it... I'm wondering if feeling upset about that has thrown my cycle off this month.

The consultant said our chances of conceiving with IUI are now really low since we've done 3 so for the next one he's putting me on chlomid so fingers crossed that makes a difference
