My wife is 8 weeks preggers, she said she remembers someone saying its bad luck to buy the cot before the baby is born. True?

We are looking at a silvercross pram which we would like to buy in a few months time, think you can buy things for the baby before they are born or is it just plain bad luck?

It is utterly up to you whether you buy things before the baby is born or not. Main thing I have heard is to wait because you don't know what you'll want to use and what will suit you and your baby best.

The whole "superstition" thing comes from, I suppose, if something were to happen (obviously hopefully not!) then you're left with the reminders of "what was going to be".

From a personal point of view, I won't buy anything "big" until late into a pregnancy, if we're that lucky, but that's because I want a lot of time to research and think about it.

Good luck! :yay: and congrats on becoming a dad :dust:

Trying to STOP my mum and aunty buying stuff is hard enough work!

I dont think it has anything to do with luck, personally, I dont believe luck exists, I merrily walk under ladder past the path of black cats etc... What usually makes situations bad in life is if you think negatively!

Like toffeepop says you need to think if something did happen you wouldnt want to be stuck with big baby furniture inyour house, but then again, thats just negative thinking!!

Im not buying anything big cos we're moving in 2 months time.

well im 10 weeks preggers and still not brought anything even though when i was pregnant before this one and miscarried i got given loads of stuff n left it in the house i soon chucked it out when i lost it. but ive not had a scan yet to say things are ok so i wont buy just yet x

It's just supersticious nonsense :) Alot of people won't have the pram in the house until the baby comes but alot of people do :)

Glad Mamafy thinks it's superstitious nonsense too :yay: I tried to be impartial but I am a believer of "everything happens for a reason, good or bad" and nothing more or less.

If I saw a bargainous pram that I loved and I was 4 weeks pregnant, I'd buy it. :)

Last time I needed a twin pram as Joe had only started walking (he was 12 weeks prem so didn't walk till very late), I bought it and assembled and kept it in the house until Katie was born along with everything else I'd bought. :)

if your both excited in buying things go ahead and buy and enjoy the pregnancy :D x

my granny had bought me a beautiful stroller last time i was pregnant. when i m/c it didnt bother me as much as everyone thought and no it didnt cause my m/c. i just put it in the attic until i got preg again. am now near 35 weeks and i dont think this one is going anywhere!!!

its rubbish!! its nice to buy wee things after your first scan but i would wait until youve had your second scan to start picking the big things cos its a loootttt more exciting when its a lil closer and you might see something you prefer after and you can shop around and get the best value if you dont rush into it!!! :D xxx

Agree with Lisa ^^^^ it's your taste that could change :)

I agree its a personal choice, and bad luck is all superstitious nonsense to me. Saying that, like tiny i'm moving house in 6 weeks, and want to wait until i'm further on before buying big furniture and stuff, so far we have bought one baby grow, but had a moses basket, stand, bath, steriliser set, bottles, dummys and lots of clothes given by a very kind friend But they are sat in my in-laws spare room until we move

Now I have a dilema! Was is sainsbury's yesturday and simply had to look at all the baby clothes and they even had little santa outfits and bibs that would have fitted babe at christmas 2010 and they were in the sale! It took all my strength to walk away but i resisted. Now i want to run back and buy it all thanks ladies!

As far as how long we all wait to buy things i think it just depends on your situation, once you've had one you have most things anyway and so to say its bad luck is nonsence! My cousin has a one year old and doesn't plan anymore - i've just asked her to hold onto her bits til i'm about 20wks and i'll buy the job lot! Not into huge fashion items just the basics and a few bits that i had before and couldn't do without. Clothes are something that i will but closer to the time, Last time i bought all of them in one day at several bootsales, not everyones cup of t but they lastest three children, i never ran out as i could buy extra, and were all in good condition as babes grow so quick and are not in them long. Shall be keeping my eye on freecycle this time too! Having a baby doesn't have to cost a frotune, should save for when they are older and do hehe

hey i was also given a lot of that stuff... steriliser is fine but apparently you cant use bottles or dummies for more than one child. I asked my midwife bout that info and she confirmed it... so you can check it out for yourself if you wish :D xx

I Dont think it has anything to do with luck either. Its personal preference. I wont be buying big things till later, but that wont stop me looking now! At least then i will get the things I like the best!

thats true erin but also allll the things i thought i wanted went out the window as i started to have to pay for them!!!lol a lot of the necessities become luxuries! xx

yeah, see your point Lisa! We are having our cot, pram and one other thing of our choice bought for us by parents but everything else......This is gonna cost a fortune, lol!

i bought my pram when I was 8 wks pregnant last time :D

my cousin and OH best friend have had a baby in 2009 so hopefully lots of hand me downs...woud be handy if we had a girl then we could get the clothes from them both.

i have always saved my big items from my pregnancy b4, but this pregnancy wasnt planned (we were going to stop at 4 lol) so ive hardly got anything left from last time, but i think i will wait til late on in the pregnancy b4 i start buying the big things xxxx
