I had really really bad problems trying to breastfeed my first born 5 years ago, partly due to my really crap small nearly inverted nipples and partly due to him being so hungry and anxious. I had to give up and tried to express but in the end he was so hungry I had to bottle feed on top. It was then that our problems started, he developed this terrible rash, was really sick and screaming. This went on for 6 months before I finally convinced my Dr that he was intolerant to cows milk so they gave me soya milk. Things were fantastic after that.

So now I am pregnant again, and I really really want to make the breastfeeding thing work this time beacuse I don't want baby no 2 to go through the same thing.

I have heard about Avents Nipplette and also another one that you just use prior to feeding which helps to bring out the nipple. Has anyone else tried either of these ??

I am inclined to think that niplette is the best answer and I know I really need to start using it now, but thats where my next problem is, the things cost £30 which we just don't have ATM. Are there any organisations out there where I can go for help or a grant of some kind?

I know a lot of you will be thinking ...it's only £30 believe me Our circumstances are dire ATM beacuse DH is a professional Scientist and he lost his job in Sept, it's not like he can go out and just get a temp job, everywhere says he's far too over qualified, and he works in such a specialised field that he is having to apply for jobs all over the world.

Anywho I know that he will get another job soon and we will get back on our feet but in the meantime I know we need to start using this thing now before my breasts are too tender.

I will beg and borrow from family members to get the money if I have to, but I need to know that it's a worthwhile investment.

Advice please ??

I dont know anything about invert nips but I do know that hospitals have breastfeeding clinics and maybe able to help you with a nipplette, they may even have one you can borrow or rent

nipple shields!!!! boots about £3!

Hi budge,

Yeah I tried them first time around but again baby was just too frantic and the damn things wouldn't stay put. Still I didn't use them from the word go, so I might try them straight away this time.

I found nipple shields a god send, on of my nipples is very flat and i used to put the shield on, and he would start sucking which would fill the shiel with milk and gradulally pull the nipple out, i know what you mean by then slipping and leaking but i used to put a little ky jelly round the edge and it would make a better seal and not move so much.

Ewan would be soo frantic wanting fed there then now, and he just couldnt latch on anyother way untill he got a bit bigger then i weaned him off the shields and he was fed for 9 months

Good luck!

ive never used them so i couldn't say how easy/hard they are to use. My friend used them coz she has inverted nipples nd like hypnorn she found them a god send. :)

have you tried the things you can use to putll your nipples out during pregnancy?

I have inverted nipples and it became such a hassle!! I did find the sheilds really good though :) and also you can get special things made for inverted nipples at mothercare (think they are avent??) I tried using a chicco sucker thing to pull them out pre-birth but it didnt work well...have you tried the avent niplettes? You use them pre birth too and they are meant to be really good :)
