Hi all,

I'm 4 weeks and atm only my boyfrienf and sister know. This is my first & I'm so out the loop about dos and don'ts and symptoms to expect! When do you tell close family? When do I tell doctor?

What can't I drink?

What can't I eat?

TIA xo

Hi Beckie - welcome & congratulations!

The obvious ones for not drinking are alcohol, and too much caffeine, although some women will stop drinking caffeine altogether. There are also some herbal teas that they advise against in pregnancy - although I couldn't list them off the top of my head!

Basics for not eating are - pate, mould ripened cheeses (brie, camembert), raw/undercooked meat - no more medium steaks :( and cured meats - salami, chorizo etc.

This page should help a bit more though - https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/foods-to-avoid-pregnant/?

When you decide to tell family is entirely up to you. Some people choose to do it straight away, some people wait until the 12 week scan (this is what we did), some people wait longer than that. Its entirely up to you and your partner.

Your doctor generally depends on your area. My doctor booked me in for an appt as soon as I found out (4 weeks), but I know some areas will just refer you straight on to the midwife between 8-10 weeks for a booking appt. Probably best to contact your surgery and find out what their procedure is.

Good luck! x

Thank you for your advice.

I'm so nervous as I miscarrried at 3 weeks last year so don't want to do anything wrong.

Congratulations and welcome. You should come and join us in sept mummies thread. Im just over 4 weeks and had a mmc in sept so im nervous too. Its great support over there. Not sure i can add more to summerwines list.keeping well hydrated is important...even if you dont feek thirsty and to only do moderate exercise (if you are used to exercise otherwise not recommended to take something new up without speaking yo midwife first). Hope to see you over in sept thread x
