Could anybody give their thoughts on when I should introduce a 3rd meal to my LO. We started weaning 3 wks ago and have increased to 2 meals this last week. When should I include a 3rd meal/breakfast? I was thinking maybe in the 4th week. I don't want to go too slow, obviously I will then be including grains as well as the vegs. :D

Ooh, I'd be interested in this too.

I currently give Evie breakfast (10ish) and tea (5ish), I introduced tea about a week ago. I'm doing BLW which is fab, Evie flatly refuses any purees off a spoon, but boy is it time consuming. Once I start introducing lunch shes going to be welded to her highchair :) I'd like to hold off for a bit but don't want it to be detrimental to her

Sorry to hijack your thread mermaid but am in a similar situation and will be watching the answers......

I've only been weaning Nathan for just over a month and he is already on 3 meals. He sort of went from 1-3 in a couple of days cos he was staving all the time.

Olivia is on 3 meals a day and has been for about 2 months now.

She feeds herself as she didnt like being fed from a spoon anymore, it takes ages and she gets in a right mess  but its all part of the fun! :cheer:

I dont think its particularly important how much they eat as breastmilk/formula are there main source of nutrition for the first year.

As long as hes settled, just go with the flow

HIya

COnal had 3 meals a day pretty much from word go as he is a greedy bugger  , from what i can remember we started with dinner cos that was when i had more time then introduced tea and then breakfast, all this in about 2 weeks, he now has a bottle about 7.30am weetabix at 9am dinner at 12 with a bottle, bottle at 3pm tea approx 5-5.30pm with water/juice a bottle at 7pm and bed, i started him with breakfast as he would start to cry for his dinner at 10.30-11am. So she should let you know when to introduce breakfast, also i used to give COnal porridge for dinner at times just so he could taste it and also so he was still getting milk in food i added fruit purree to it for different tastes.

Good luck

I always offer some milk before solids but it is confusing when you are told that baby now requires more iron etc from foods and can affect the brain development! :wall:

You are right Tasha in using your own judgement x

He looks a very happy and very healthy little man!

As for the iron, it's in your breastmilk, and much better absorbed than from formula or food.

Taken from kelly mom http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/iron.html

Anemia is uncommon in breastfed babies for several reasons

Healthy, full-term babies have enough iron stores in their bodies to last for at least the first six months. The current research indicates that a baby's iron stores should last between six and twelve months, depending upon the baby.

The iron in breastmilk is better absorbed than that from other sources. The vitamin C and high lactose levels in breastmilk aid in iron absorption.

Iron Source Percentage of Iron Absorbed
breastmilk ~50 - 70%
iron-fortified cow milk formula ~3 - 12%
iron-fortified soy formula less than 1% - 7%
iron-fortified cereals 4 - 10%
cow's milk ~10%
Note: The amount of iron absorbed from any food depends greatly upon the milk source of iron (eg, human vs cow), type of iron compound in the food, the body's need for iron, and the other foods eaten at the same meal.

Breastfed babies don't lose iron through their bowels; cow's milk can irritate the intestinal lining (resulting in a tiny amount of bleeding and the loss of iron).
The original iron stores of a full-term healthy baby, combined
with the better-absorbed iron in breastmilk, are usually enough
to keep baby's hemoglobin levels within the normal range
well into the second six months.

Remember alot of the hvs still dont know wha they are talking about and most just think they know!

Take em with a pinch of salt and do your own research, or ask me :D

i am coming into the 4th week of lukes weaning he has breakfast with a bottle. then dinner (inc a dessert) and a bottle 2 hours later then a bottle for tea and a bottle pre bed this week i intend to take him up to 3 meals a day so add the tea time savoury meal with his bottle.

I started weaning Jake at 5 1/2 months. I started him on breakfast and then a week later introduced dinner and then a week after that tea. At first Jake was still having four 8oz bottles but within weeks he dropped to three bottles and now he has even less. Jake is now 8 1/2 months and has breakfast, dinner(with dessert) and tea(with dessert) aswell as three 7oz(sometimes a bit less) bottles. I also give Jake juice throughout the day although he doesn't drink that much of it.

Well we just started on veg/fruit combos yesterday after trying lots of single foods. I'm planning on starting breakfast later this week though the little man isn't generally that hungry in the morning, so will see how it goes. :)

good luck WIllow was never really interested in breakfast she's a savory girl and likes her dinner and tea, she started having regular breakfasts around 1 1-1/2
