hi ladies,

im considering a hypnobirthing course and was wondering if anyone in here had done it and if so, did it actually help and work during labour?

xx

I used Natal Hypnotherapy during pregnancy and labour and it was bloody fantastic!

I was skeptical about it at first and did not understand how it was going to help in labour as it was not my first child so I had experienced the pain and could not get my head around how your were supposed to relax while in pain. But it really helped me to relax and sleep during pregnancy so I carried on.

Honestly, during labour it helped! Having the breathing to concentrate on and being in such a relaxed state made me zone out during contractions, but crack jokes and laugh when not having them. My labour from waters breaking until delivery was 1 hour 58 mins with no pain relief and they said my relaxed state was the reason it was so quick. When you are relaxed your body can do what it needs to do to progress your labour.

I could not afford the course and my partner works odd shifts so it would not have worked for us anyway so instead we brought the 4cd boxset and book for effective birth preparation and did it at home. You do need to be focused on making it work doing it this way but it is totally worth it. The book prepared my OH completely for labour (it was his first child) and he knew what I wanted and how to help me as he was more informed about child birth. He also knew how to relax me and was the main point of contact for the midwife.

Can't recommend it enough hun. Xxx

thank you such much miss! did you remember it all ok? im worried we will pay out and then when the pain kicks in everything i learn will go out the window? x

You are most welcome hun.

I did the relaxation from the first trimester virtually everyday so it was a completely natural state for me. When I first started it took me ages to get into being totally relaxed but with practice I could turn it on and off in a couple of breaths. When the contractions came it was second nature to just stop, breath and zone out I did not even have to think about it.

It the late stages when the contractions where coming thick and fast my OH helped me out with relaxation triggers and breathed with me - he said the experience was amazing!

It's not something that you can just do a couple of times and expect it to help you in labour....you really do need to make it a part of your life leading up to the birth so that it just becomes something you do

My labour with my daughter was amazing - I honestly never thought I would say that after the labour I had with my son lol xxx

I'd love to do it this time round if I get a bfp. Aren't the courses really expensive? x

Hey Kedi it was the natal hypnotherapy set for birth centre birth by Maggie Howel and the book to go with it was called Effective Birth Preparation. They can be found here www.natalhypnotherapy.co.uk

Can't recommend it enough.

I did a course - cost a couple of hundred - didnt end up using it as baby was breech and ended up with a c section. However i was really calm throughout this - which isnt really me - so i too would recommend.

Im still in touch with the other girls that i did the course with me and one has just given birth and couldnt recommend the course enough - used the techniques successfully all the way through - which i was really pleased to hear..........knowing the person its coming from (if this makes sense - rather than just reading other peoples accounts of it.)

I cant recommend it enough - but like others have said you really need to work on the techniques constantly - its not just a matter of reading it and thinking you can get through ok, it takes quite a bit of committment we all found. Also the sourse really helps you to learn when to use the techniques and when - which i dont think you get from books etc, so i would say its definatly worth while doing the course if you can find and afford one.

Hi - I'm a Marie Mongan Hypnobirthing mother. I can't recommend this course highly enough. I was terrified of going into hospital, terrified of giving birth and terrified of pain. My list was endless.

I had my first baby in May - my labour lasted 2 hours 50 minutes and I didn't have an epidural.

The course was £250 - my practitioner did it over 2 weekends. They teach you breathing techniques, visualisation techniques and you get cd's and the book written by Marie Mongan. There is a cd of birthing affirmations that I listened to for 3 months before my baby arrived. I played driving to and from work everyday (a 45 minutes each way drive). The affirmations are things like " I am focused on a smooth, easy birth...I am happy that my baby is finally coming to me...my baby and my body will know how to work in harmony with each other).

I had a fear release session during the 2 weekends and went back for one more just before my daughter was born. I am certain that hypnobirthing was the reason behind my smooth, easy labour. The mind is a wonderful tool. Go for it - you won't regret it but be prepared to practice the techniques.

I will certainly be doing this with my next. I breathed through my contractions last time and had minimal pain relief but didn't do any hypnobirthing. I can imagine it just makes the whole experience so calm.

I did the Marie Mongan method hypnobirthing too - best £200 I have ever spent. Was terrified of giving birth before did it, and have absolutely NO pain threshold - need morphine for a paper cut! Ended up giving birth at home (didn't make it to hospital in time) with only my hubby and me there, no pain relief and was totally calm through the whole thing.

Wow - well done!! Thats amazing.

I also used the natal hypnotherapy cds and they def worked for me! I was totally calm and had a very quick labour (hour and half from waters breaking) with no pain relief. I was 9cm on arriving at hospital and before I really felt anything that was what I would call a contraction and Kynon was born a few mins after this, I'm sure it was the hypnotherapy working as although my last labour was 4 hours it was a lot more painful and I wasn't in control and calm like this time.
