Hi all,

I am 9 weeks at the moment and have my scan in a couple of weeks. I'm in a bit of a predicament on how to tell work. I am on a temporary contract and have recently had time off for anxiety around 3 weeks. They have been very supportive. I'm struggling with my morning sickness alot which is making me anxious so want to make work aware however I'm terrified of telling them as have only been there for six months. I don't want them to get fed up with me especially after my time off. Any tips?

Just go and see your boss and get it over with asap. Get right to the point! They'll appreciate you telling them sooner rather than later. This way, when you need time off for scans/sickness etc., they'll be expecting it and can have something in place to cover you. It sounds like they're very supportive so I doubt they'll be nasty to you about it :)

Hi there!

I do not know how it works when you do have a temporary contract but I understand the pickle of being in a situation where you have been off work before.

I have been off work on and off because of cluster headaches and started to feel about it (obviously) and then BOOM I am pregnant. I though this is the end for me in the company I work for...
But i told my boss quiet right away that I am pregnant and that unfortunately I am feeling very ill at times to a point where I can't just even travel to work in the first place. Surprisingly he was very understanding of the situation and told me not to worry, if I don't feel well...than I just don't feel well. There is not really much I can do about it.

So I think (my opinion!) it is really not a bad idea to tell your boss already as this can change his outlook in so many ways.

Sending you love, hugs and strength!

I'm all for being upfront about it. I had to come clean at work as there's a lot of restrictions for me. As it affects what I can do, half my department now knows because it's just too difficult to hide!! It was always something that really bothered me as I'm a private person but actually it has made my life so much easier and I really needn't have worried. I feel much more supported and I haven't really struggled with symptoms so there's definitely even more to gain if you are. You say your work are supportive so I would just go for it. I know that wouldn't be for everyone and I totally understand your reservations.

Hey,

I am not on a temp contract but feel anxious about telling work too. In my particular case, I KNOW that having a baby will affect my career hugely and when I tell my bosses they'll be polite (they have to be!)....but will secretly be raging! Ugh, not looking forward to that day!

Your situation is probably completely different, you should feel comfortable to tell them and you'll get support from your HR department. The sooner you tell them, the sooner you get paid time off for appointments etc.

Let us know how it goes? Do you plan to tell them straight after your scan? Just as a side note, temporary contract or not, by law you have the right to all of the protection a permanent employee has and cannot be treated any differently xx

I understand your worries but once you’ve told your employer you’re protected by all the legalities that are attached to being pregnant, for example pregnancy related sickness from work should be recorded separately to other/previous sickness and can’t be used negatively against you. Also if there was any part of your role that you couldn’t do because of your pregnancy they would need to make allowances. I know it can’t take away the worry that they might be seething under their breath about the situation, I’m sure my boss certainly was as I’d just taken on a new position, but they can’t show it or do anything negative towards you because of it. It can be a scary conversation to have with your boss but try and remember that there can be no negative outcome because of it xx

Thank you all, reading all your comments has helped I know I won't have a job once Ive had the baby but with partners wage we should be okay. Going to tell them this week as have a catch up with my manager so hopefully it shall all go well. Will let you all know. I am a big worrier so probably building it up worse in my head but at the end of the day my baby is the most important thing now.

Was supposed to be meeting with my manager this morning and he seems to have gone AWOL had psyched myself up and everything. Hopefully will track him down later and ask for a quick chat. Sleepless night last night worrying about telling him so know I need to do it today then I can relax.

Don't stress yourself. I was worried as well but then as you said yourself. Your baby is the most important thing at the minute!

It will go just fine. xx

Thank you, feel stupid for worrying as it's only work at the end of the day I just know he will be shocked due to my age.

Catching up in about half an hour oh god I am terrified

Don't be! Don't do that to yourself.

Remember there is NOTHING he can do. He THINKS something "stupid" - so what? Who cares?? YOU ARE HAVING A BABY. I wouldn't let anyone bring me down "because" of that.

You go girl!

Tell us how it went afterwards. xx

Thank you for the support finally saw him 15 mind before finishing and he was shocked but supportive weight off my shoulders now
