My midwife told me that the maternity ward is so busy at the moment, that they are trying to keep people in for 6 hours only! (depending on what time of day it is).

Now don't get me wrong, I was completely bored last time and was fed up with midwives coming in every 30mins for one thing or another, it seemed constant BUT part of me feels it's not really fair. Surely after having a baby you should at least be able to stay one night if you want to? I'm never at the doctors or hospital, these are the only times when I'll need their services and they just don't have space for you.

If someone had of let me leave earlier the last time, I would have jumped at the chance but now that I have a wee one already, a break for the first night might be nice instead of going home and trying to spend time with her straight away so she doesn't feel left out.

It's not the hospitals fault if they are full up, but just find it a bit ridiculous.

OMG, this is terrible. 6 hours?! This is my first and although I'm afraid of going into hospital and having to stay, being turfed out after 6 hours is rough!

At my hospital it was a 12 hour limit! To start off with I thought that was stupid but after I had charley, I really wanted to go home so was only in hospital 5 hours after giving birth. I do think you should be able to stay in at least 24 hours especially if it's your first!

i think it shud be a personal choice thing if someone wishes to stay in over night for the first night they shud be able to

Yeah and to be fair to them, they won't force anyone to leave that early but MW said they will probably ask if you want to leave after 6 hours if everything is normal. And I suppose if it's busy I don't want to hold up a bed that could be used for someone else. It was noisy enough on the ward the first one round when it was dead nevermind packed.. Maybe leaving early is a good idea.

u shudnt ever feel pushed into it though if u dont feel ready a mean what do we pay our taxes for makes ya feel a bit like cattle that

with my 4th it was a 6 hour stay if born before 2pm after 2pm you had to stay in overnight. i had her at exactly 2pm and got the choice i said go home but i was feeling fine had no stitches nothing i was back home by 4pm so didn't even do the 6 hours, but my kids all stay out the first night and me and husband get to spend time just us and the baby then when other kids come back baby tends to get ignord by us and we pay all the other kids our attention thats why we have that first night but i know everone doesn;t like to do that or have that option. with my 5th i had him at around 11pm no idea what time never gt told and i had him on inuction ward not labour ward cause midwife didnlt believe me, anyway they asked me straight away if i wanted to go home, hubby jumped in and said no she's not she staying here tonight she has never had stitches before 1st time and she is in shock, apparently i was shaking and falling off the bed. so i know they do try and get you out asap. but they kept me in on my husbands request as i was not aware of anything at that point and hadn't had any drugs only paracetemol, so i think if you want to stay say so, and if your in no fit state state to your husband before hand that you would like him to say so.

At my hospital it was 4 hours! i had Tegan at 3.58pm by 8pm they were ready to send me home But pediatrician found Tegan had a heart murmour so we had to stay in xx
