Hello all,
I'll quickly bash this out whilst Madame is asleep! I gave birth to a beautiful little 7lb 8oz girl on Sunday 19th April at 09:31am
I had been getting contractions on and off, nothing was regulating and I was getting frustrated. On Saturday the 18th this was still the case, but I noticed that I needed to wee more and after every wee I would have a contraction. I thought I'd maybe had a water infection or UTI so called triage for some advise. They told me it sounded like early labour.
I put my son to bed and decided to clean the kitchen and bathroom. We were planning a home birth so I wanted the downstairs to be nice and clean. I tidied the living room and swept the floor then went to bed.
Now, don't judge me for this part. I kept weeing, and because my only bathroom is downstairs and I couldn't be bothered to go up and downstairs constantly, I took up a bucket to pee in, I kept having to pee every 8 minutes and I noticed I was having contractions every 10 minutes! I went to wee again and at this point I felt a grumble in my tummy and my waters broke in the bucket (what luck!)
I phoned triage and asked if they could let the homebirth midwife on duty know that I'm contracting every 10 minutes and my waters have broken. The midwife on duty rang straight away and I told her I'd be fine for a bit and I'll call back when I feel like I'm progressing.
I think woke my partner up and asked him to get the pool inflated in the living room, but not to start filling it yet.
I went downstairs to turn on the hot water, and set up the kitchen with cups and glasses and everything for tea and coffee and biscuits within easy reach for my partner to make drinks for the midwives.
My contractions ramped it up a gear pretty quickly and were coming every 4 minutes. I noticed I was feeling the contraction in my bum rather than cervix. I dealt with the pain by 'boosting my tens machine' and timing the contraction and focusing on a word on the app I was using whilst it would peak.
I called the midwife back and told her she was going to need to come as this was progressing a lot quicker than I thought it would. By the time she arrived 20 minutes later, I was on the toilet and not leaving it as my contractions were coming every 2 minutes and I'd pee uncontrollably whilst I was contracting!
She managed to check me and I was 5 cm dilated but she felt the baby was at a funny angle... She asked where I'd felt my kicks and I told her under my ribs on the left... The baby was in a position called 'right occiput transverse' uh oh!
The second midwife and a student arrived and I was ready to get in the pool... Only my partner was struggling to fill it as he hadn't done a dry run. I started getting thr urge to push.
It was about 3am by this point, and I started getting regular contractions at 11pm)
Once I was in the pool (which felt amazing) I was told to just do what my body wanted, if I wanted to push, then push.
I ended up pushing for 6 hours in total because the baby wouldn't come down the birth canal. My heart rate got quite high at one point but my amazing midwife guided me through my contractions to help calm me down and allow my heart rate to reduce.
Because of the position of the baby, it presented with the largest part of its head first (thanks kimberley!) so getting her out was really bloody painful!
My son woke up around 6am and would pop down to see if the baby was here yet then go back upstairs to watch some tv
Once her head was out we called him down as he wanted to be there for her to be born. She struggled to get into a position where her shoulders could come out comfortably so ended up coming out with her shoulders at a funny angle too. I scooped her out of the water and she just looked around in shock!
My son then announced the sex of the baby (with the help of the midwife as he couldn't work it out haha!) and said 'it's a girl... But I wanted a boy!'
I delivered the placenta about half an hour later, and got out of the pool. Was checked and needed no stitches
The midwives were all gone within 2 hours and we were all tucked up in bed cuddling the baby together as a family of 4.
It was absolutely heavenly.
I still can't seem to attach a photo but I did request to join the April mummies facebook group ages ago and I don't think it's been accepted! I've got pics of her on my facebook!
