Hello lovelies - hoping for some advice. How do I go about planning for a home birth. What do I need t do, buy, think about! Any help/ideas would be much appreciated xxxxxx Oh want a water birth too so that will make a difference! xx

Lots of towels I should imagine :) I've never had a home birth but I've seen them into you have to talk to your mw about it sometimes they will just say they don't do it in your areas and you have to hire a independent midwife and you can rent a bath, heater, and cover for the top and floor. The midwife that you have/hire you should be able to get the kit off sometimes its free other times it isn't she will bring gas and air and pethadine with her x

Lots and lots and lots of towels! I went thru a gazillion! Most areas are supportive now, if they say no, tell them you'll just not call up and do it on your own ;) like Evie said, you can hire birth pools, can't remember any sites tho! Value shower curtains are ace cos you can just throw them down to protxt things! A torch, useful if they need extra lighting to "certain" areas! When you discuss it with your mw they'll talk you thru it all, they drop you off a home birth kit which contains all they'll need, think it's after 37 weeks they do that!

Mine was an impromptu home birth so we were really unprepared, but they've said next time they'll just prep me for a home birth!

Dysco is having a home birth hun, she will be best placed to advise!

xxxxxx

In my area, all you need to do is express your intention to your midwife and they will sort their side of things.

My midwife mentioned a cheap shower curtain being good protection for flooring particularly with a water birth.

You can hire a pool. Ask your midwife first, I know our local midwifery led unit has a couple they hire out for a very reasonable charge (you obviously get a brand new liner).

You can have gas and air at home, the midwives will supply it. You can also hire TENS quite cheaply.

Other than that I would be thinking about whether you want any other kit, birthing ball, beanbag, nice candles.

In UK they have to attend a home birth by law if that's what you want, so it shouldn't matter what area you live in, but it has to be said some are more supportive than others.

Keep us posted, I don't think I will be having a home birth myself this time around but I was born at home myself and I like to hear about other peoples experiences.
