Was in agony 2 weeks ago because my wisdom tooth became infected and the emergency dentist prescribed penecillin vk and booked me in for an extraction (which will take place when I'm 13 weeks plus 5 days. I'm currently 12 weeks and 3 days right now and worried about the pending proceedure.

A)Will it be safe for the baby??

B)What if they don't give me enough anesthetics because I'm pregnant and I feel it!!

Terrified, mortified, petrified....

Has anyone had a tooth extraction in their first/early second trimester and had a healthy pregnancy and baby? Was it painless?

PS. I did have dental work done in my last pregnancy at around 2 or 3 weeks, even before I confirmed the pregnancy with a home test. Everything turned out fine. But maybe it was too early for any damage to happen to the foetus and it was 3 years ago so I was younger etc.. I've read online that heavy dental work is a major 'no, no' and should be postponed for later pregnancy if possible so it now feels like I'm pushing my luck. <-------Wow, sound like a crazy person. It's like if there's anything that can go wrong, I'm the pefrect candidate to fill in every statistical gap !

Thank goodness for the anonymity of online forums where one can unleash the neurotic mess that they've become to the rest of the world while pretending to hold it together so well in real life.

Hi I am a dental nurse, does the dentist know you are pregnant? if not then you need to tell them. All ok for baby though and they would not take your tooth out until you are totally numb. Make sure you eat an hour before you go for your appointment just in case you feel faint at your appointment.

Some dentists chose to not do any treatment until after baby is born if it is not urgent, so depends on your situation. xx

Hi, thanks so much for the reply. It's good to know I will be totally numb.
Yes, my dentist is fully aware and has tried to reassure me that all will be fine. However, every online site I come across seems to indicate that it is harmful. Why else would dentists choose to wait?

Hey im 13 weeks now and had a tooth out 2 weeks ago, its perfectly safe with baby and no different to normal extraction (had one out while not pregnant too) i wont lie it was terrible but not everyone has that experience. Only difference i found with being pregnant is that u cant take very good pain killers after. Good luck x

I need my 2 bottom wisdom teeth out due to them being impacted and getting infected. I was on antibiotics a few weeks ago due to an infection and as this has happened multiple times now I am being referred to have them removed AFTER my baby is born.

Dentist said as I will need knocked out (you need knocked out for lower wisdom teeth, not sure about upper due to the complexity) it's not recommended in pregnancy and they will get me by with antibiotics unless I'm having to take the antibiotics too regularly in which case they'll take them out in late pregnancy.

If this has only happened once then i would wait until after baby is born. Some dentists can be a bit too keen in taking wisdom teeth out but, as was explained to me a few years ago when I started getting issues, the procedure can be quite complicated due to nerves running close and the risk of damage to them. I would want a second opinion if it were me x

Dentists will usually not do amalgam fillings (silver) during pregnancy due to mercury. An extraction will be fine though :)

I had a tooth out on Wednesday I hsd antibiotics and an anesthetic caused me no problems and dentist knew I was pregnant xx

Yeah, general anesthesia is an entirely different kettle of fish and they'll avoid it in pregnancy unless it's absolutelydetrimental to your health and baby's health if they didn't.

Luckily, my wisdom tooth is on my upper right jaw and I don't need a hospital referral as the dentist said that it can be removed with local anesthesia.

On top of that, I found out yesterday that I'm having twins! Not sure if that makes any difference but will definitely bring it up during the appoitment.

I'm glad to know all you other ladies sailed through the ordeal of tooth extraction in pregnancy and it helps to put my mind at ease a bit more.

I reckon it will be a fairly simple extraction not like lower where the bone is less dense. Im a dental nurse and although dentists tend to avoid treatment while pregnant being in pain for weeks will cause unnecessary stress and be more harmful. You will be fine xx

Well, I went in for my treatment today and asked the dentist if there was any adrenaline in the local anesthetic and if it was going to be in any way harmful to the twins. I told her the stuff I read online and she said that she's done this job for a long time and never heard of anything like that before and that the anesthetic was safe. She said the NHS wouldn't give pregnant women free treatment if there were any risks.

Anyway, Im free of that awful wisdom tooth which took less than 5 mins to remove and was completely painless (apart from the unnerving cracking noises coming from my skull!) Don't know how I'll feel when the anesthetic wears off but if there's any soreness it shouldn't be a fraction as painful as a toothache the infection had caused.

So there you have it peeps. If anyone else is worried about a tooth extraction and reads this thread, I hope it gives them some peace of mind.

When it wears off take a wee paracetamol if its a wee but tender it will ease it off then tommorow make sure to rinse with hot salt water and take it easy xx

Thanks Natalie,

And congrats on your BFP.

No pain, but nausea hit pretty hard. I don't think it's pregnancy related as it hasn't been this bad in 2 weeks and only started after extraction (guessing it's due to all the blood swallowed).

Glad it wasn't too bad for you hun. I had a top wisdom tooth taken out due to infection (wasn't pregnant though) and the thought of it was worse than the reality!

You would think with how advanced medical science is there would be a better way to extract a tooth than pretty much yanking it out LOL. Surely there should be a laser or something that just zaps it LOL.

I had all.four of mine.out due to.them.being impacted amd.infected and I wasn't knocked out for any of them :/ not even the lower ones!! I feel done! Good luck, it isn't pleasant but you'll feel.so much better.afterwards xx

If only MrsG81! The proceedure felt more like a car mechanic removing a large industrial bolt rather than a dentist removing a tooth. I bet some people who read this will be all "Weird that these women can ever give birth if they're wussing out about a tooth!" Haha, appreciate the irony folks.

Am I right in guessing you weren't pregnant during your proceedure, Lyllian?

Hello, I have the same problem, i had a filling on my wisdom tooth and as I am pregnant all my fillinf felt off, so i am in pain since 2 days now, been to the dentist, and been told to come back after my baby is born...i just had a few paracetamol's, but useless. I am going to my gp tomorrow and hopefully someone will give me an answer.
I don t really know what to do to get rid of the pain, and also it started to swollen so for sure I have an infection.
I called 111 , but all they do is chatting, hospital ward won t help me, so I am scared that the infection might affect my baby

Hey, I had 3 wisdom teeth extracted as they were impacted & getting infected a lot. I had a twilight sedation as I needed some of the jaw bone chipping away but I did have to wait until after my small guy was born. And I bled for 24 hours constantly...... The good thing was though that I didn't have any swelling or bruising. I had to have blood pressure checked a week before appointment & morning of appointment then had a cannula fitted in my hand for the sedation to be given.

Depends how bad yours are. They may decide to wait if it's minor surgery required such as stitches etc.

Best thing I ever did though, no more pain!!

Good luck X
