Hi All

Would really like your advice!

My son is 21 weeks old and only weighs 10lb he usually has 6 bottles a day of 5oz... His eating his hands constantly and always tried to grab our food! So i decide to take on the challenge of weaning!

He loves jar food! He doesnt even spit any out!
For 1 week now I have been replacing 2 of his bottles with jar food! Is this right wat I am doing? He seems to have really gone of his milk all of sudden and is only wanting to take about 2oz! So im worrying!

Also i have heard that I should be giving him juice now his eating solids, so I have also been trying to give him juice (apparently it prevents constipation) He wont take juice out of a cup only a bottle but Ive heard this is wrong?

Ur advice would really be appreciated xxxx

At this age milk is still the main part of his diet. What I was doing was giving charley a bottle then a hour later give him food. I found when I started weaning him he went off his milk but he's back drinking it more than food again!
I've started giving charley juice too but it took a while for him to get used to a beaker. He kept spitting it out to start off with but kept trying and now he loves his cup!!

Tegan is 20 weeks and i started food this week, Im only giving one meal a day she has a 6oz bottle at 5pm then at 6pm she has some Pureed fruit then a 4oz bottle at 8pm. If i give food before bottle she then refuses to drink ANY of the bottle x

like LM said, at this stage milk is really important. when i first started i offered the milk first and then just a few spoons of food afterwards! or if he wouldnt take it i offered him food an hour or so after the bottle. at the moment he has 3 small ish meals a day but still has 5 x 7oz bottles in 24 hours! he has water or juice diluted with water in a beaker or bottle with handles but he doesnt get it yet, i will keep at it tho!

Thank u all for taking the time to reply.

A couple of things... if I feed him food after his bottle wouldnt I be feeding him when his not hungry?? therefore he will just get use 2 wanting food for the sake of it not because his hungry?

also.. I have been buying him jars of food, giving him only a couple of spoonfulls and then having to throw the jar away sounds like a waste?

i was the same with the jars, but somecan last in the fridge for 48 hours!!! when i initially started u mainly used baby rice and cereal and although on the pack it said mix with water i used my lo's milk!!! initally its all about getting him used to the different textures in his mouth and getting used to swallowing food..

i thought the same but my lo has now dropped a bottle and has 3 bottles during the day (he used to have 4) and he still has 2 during the night" i know dont give milk and food together as i want him to get used to the idea that food is sperate from milk if you get me... so today he had a bottle at 6am, and then at 9am he has baby rice. he will have food again at 12, and usually a bottle at 2, then food at 5, and a bottle at 7. i much prefer doing it this way and he seems ahppier too as he is taking much more food this way! sorry to ramble on hope it helps lol.

i hope im not repeating anything but i wanted to give you what we did.

We started J weaning at about 18 weeks....once a day we gave him a little pureed food.... EVentually we have slowly built up until now at almost 24 weeks, he has enough variety that his routine is:

7.30 - 7oz bottle with baby rice (milk used to make up baby rice so about 5.5 fl oz in liquid)
12 (ish) - 7fl oz and 2/3 ice cube things of pureed fruit/veg (either one fruit but three cubes worth or 2/3 different things) with just water
4 - JUST a 7 oz bottle
6.30 pureed food which consists off maybe 3 different vegs and a sweet thing
11 - 2/3 fl oz.

we always MAKE SURE we give him avocado once a day for the simple reason its the most nutritious (or one of) fruit of veg you can have!

We also give him half a rice cake if we eat in front of him cos he always wants what we have!
