help re depo

have any of you ladies had the depo injection if so can u help, my 17 year old neice has had it for 2 months but the last 2 to 3 weeks she has been really down not sleeping and crying alot and we wondered if it could be a side affect. she saiys she is not worried about anything just feels down and its not like her any comments welcome

It could be the change in horones, they affect different ppl in different ways. beware, i know 3 people who became pg on depo

i have the depo injection n i dont really have any of those side effects. Maybe she should go bk and ask her GP?

I was on the depo injection about four years ago. It changed me into a completely different person. I was depressed all the time, lost my temper at the slightest thing. I didn't want to do anything or go anywhere. My OH said I turned into a stranger. I also put on loads of weight. Coming off it was the best thing I ever did. It also stopped my periods totally and they didn't come back till about 7 mths after coming off it.

Hope I've not worried you to much hun. Maybe talking to her Doctor may put your sisters mind at rest. Hoped I've not scared you too much.

i've just come off the depo, i bled for the whole 12 wks (not heavy though ) was miserable & had no sex drive what so ever.
am now on the pill & feel better, although this could be just coincidence

I was on depo for a year or so. I put almost 2 stone on and was suffering with depression too

I don't think I will bother going on it again to be honest

Thats EXACTLY how it effected me too, apparantly with my history of depression I should never have been put on it to begin with.

Your niece may settle into it, it effects people differently, but basically it tricks your body into thinking your pregnant, and that includes the hormonal imbalances and may explain why a lot of women put on weight and lose their sex drive as well as the mood swings.

Its also worth noting that depo provera has been trialled on men in USA prisons for sex offences and was found to completely quash their sexual urges. Makes you wonder.

I used to run a contraceptive site and the comments about depo were very mixed from weight gain to depression to the best thing they've done.

Personal experience is I had no problem, didnt put on weight, didnt get depressed or turn into the bitch from hell. I had horrendous periods before and it was the best thing in the world for me as the few and far between ones were very light. Only stopped it as GP stopped prescribing it so went on the pill and ended up with LO!


I'd say definately go back to the GP, as with all medications it suits some and not others.

I always suffered from depression and when I had this, its the time my depression hit an all time high! and I never had any idea that it could of been this! they never mentioned anything like it! I thought it was just me getting worse

I suffered Post Natal depression after I had Jordan. Maybe thats why it affected ne the way it did. I would never go back on it again thats for sure.
