help! mums that are not going back to work...

I'm just the same as you hun, I wouldn't even make enough money to cover child care unfortunately so I have to stay at home. You seem to be in the same financial bracket as me and I have been told that I qualify for about £30 per week child tax credit too, so make sure you look into that :) Make sure you look at things like income support as well, and let me know, lol!

We rent unfortunately, dead expensive :( hoping i can get help with that at least. And yea, OHs money will be all gone here too.

xx

I'm lucky that OH will have the kids 1 day a week but i still need to sort child care out for the other day i will work! I'd love to be a sahm but i'm worried people will think i'm lazy not going back to work! OH can afford to keep us both but he's very tight with his money!! grrr

Awww, tight men are no good, lol. Pinch his wallet when he's not looking :D My OH uses all his money to pay the bills as it is but if I ever find out that he wants something, I will insist he buys it and then I will stretch my ESA to cover the space. I go without most months so he can have stuff, my veiw is he's the one working his butt off so he deserves the treats. :) He got a bonus last month and used most of it to put the car through its MOT :S I made sure he bought himself whatever he wanted first though, I can't stand the thought of him going without.

I wont be able to afford to go back to work either as childcare would be at least £700 where I live and my travel costs to work are £200 it just isnt worth it I would be working to pay child care cost and travel and thats it lol! but at the same time not sure how we will cope without my wage, we rent as well!

My son is 18months and I decided not to return to work. I dont think there's much help you can get, you either lose out by going to work and paying for nursery or you stay at home and lose out! We pretty much live off the working tax credits we get each week.

is it right, we get 6weeks at 90% of pay then 33 weeks at SMP £124.88 ? So we get paid for 39weeks altogether, I am asking to go back part time, however, I think SMP is more than I will earn to want to take full advantage of it!! THanks

emz not sure as where i work you get 90 % wages for 6 weeks then smp at the £123 rate or if less you earn less than that you would get what your wage is for that week. but like i say may change wherever you work as i work for mod and they have all sortsof different rules!! hope that makes sense xx

yep depends on ur employer if they wana pay u more than the 90% for the first 6 weeks... mine doesnt, i kno NHS does tho,

the minimum they will pay u is £124.88 per week,(up until april 2011, when it will increase a few pence cos of increase in benefit rates) and this is for 33 weeks, but you can have a full year off... but the last 13 are unpaid, completely,

If your oh is part time you can get help with the rent off the council (housing benefit) that's around £200 every fortnight then a council tax reduction. Also you van def get Woking tax credits at a higher family rate that's about £170 a week hope this helps xx

i was told if i didnt go bk to work after i wud have to pay back the maternity pay they gave me :s is that true?? :/

You would have to pay back any maternity pay you received OVER AND ABOVE the statutory minimum amount - so if they offer a good maternity incentive package you would probably have to pay that back if you did not return to work and it says so in your contract of employment.

Statutory minimum is 90% of your earnings for the first 6 weeks of your maternity leave, then the remaining 33 weeks at £124.88 - if this is what you get they you would not have to pay this back if you left. You also can take up to 52 weeks maternity leave but obviously after week 39 you would not receive any maternity pay.

Hope this helps x

Iv been a stay at home mum since my first daughter was born nearly 6 years ago and my husband works very hard to pay the bills and we dont have a lot of money left. Unfortunaltely there isnt a lot of help we get child benefit and child/working tax creds but its not much at all it doesnt even cover how much petrol I use in a week and we dont get any help with council tax or rent!!! he earns a decent wage now and has a very good job but when we were first starting out he only earned about £15000 a year and we still got no help with anything. There should be much more help out there for working families but unfortunaltely there is not id love to work but it just wouldnt be worth it with childcare costs and we would have the little working tax creds we do get taken from us so no point at all. x

over and above the 90% for 6 weeks ov ur normal wage n the 124.88 you dont have to pay back... anything above this if they offer a decent maternity scheme yeh u have to pay it back...

but if you go on to claim benefits they can only accept what u can afford n can demand it all back at once, but if you havnt got it, you cant pay it back... can you?? :)

sounds bad i kno, but as long as u pay back something, mines £5 per week, (or thats what iv been told by the HR department) then you are repaying and they cant do oat besides sendin u shitty letters....

so i wouldnt let it worry u too much, lol
