At Poppy's 6 week check, the HV mentioned she had a slight head lag. In the test where they lift them up from a lying position by their arms, she wasn't bringing her head up and so the HV wanted to see us again at 10 weeks to see if it's improved. Our appointment is on friday and I'm worried there doesn't seem to be much improvement.
When Poppy is sitting on my lap, she can hold her head up but it's very wobbly and often flops to the side. She hates tummy time, although I've been trying to give her lots of it. She'll lift her head for a second but then gets annoyed and starts crying. I've tried the arm test myself today, and she still doesn't try to lift her head AT ALL. I'm really worried :( Has anyone got any advice?

Isla hated tummy time on the floor but would lie on my stomach and lift her head for ages. Other than that I've not got any advice, babies do all develop at different paces so try not to worry xxxx

I wouldn't worry too much hon, my LO hated tummy time and couldn't practice either. Every baby is different, I don't see how every single baby should all be at the same stage in every part of their development by 6 weeks old  it could be that when she is with you she is more relaxed, she might be totally different when the HV does the test :)

emma doesn't like tummy time that much on the floor but she lie on my legs no problem and lift her head up to look round the room for ages. its hard to describe, sit on a chair with your legs on a footstool so they are at a tilt with there legs wrapped round your belly and there head at your knees? think they like the fact they are on your warm legs and not a cold floor!

I've tried laying her on her tummy on my lap just now and she doesn't seem to mind that - you must be right about the cold floor! And she seems to lift her head no problem this way. I think maybe she's just being lazy.
She is so strong in other ways - she has very strong legs and brilliant arm co-ordination already (she's clearly trying to grab at her toys) so maybe her neck muscles just need time to catch up a bit! It's funny because when she was a brand newborn, I thought she had a very strong neck until the HV mentioned it and I began to notice it was a bit wobbly! They do like to worry you don't they

joshua was so slow at lifting his head properly id say about 3.5-4 months properly whilst on his tummy!! but to be honest its not 'affected' his development in any way, he talks/ babbles as he should, walks, learns things! its just some babies develop differently. i reckon they obvs take an average age of babies development but that means that some babies are above that and some are below it! worry not just give a little tummy time everyday and go from there!! tbh i think its horrible that hv/mw/gps etc say things like that to parents, speesh new parents as it put the fear of god i nto them and thats not fair! hugs hun x

Well, saw hv today and she said poppy's head lag is gone and that she's absolutely fine. So i suppose her saying about the head lag initially has had me worried and obviously imagining things! Unless Poppy is just lazy for me and then behaves herself for the HV ;)
