does anyone know of any antihistermines you can take hen your pregnant??
Because i get really bad hayfever an di can just feel it starting x

I actually asked my doctor the same question yesterday as I get really bad hay fever too - he said that nothing has been tested so nothing is "safe". He said traditional antihistamines often contain steroids which are known to have an effect on the baby, but what that effect could be no-one can be sure as it's morally wrong to test drugs on pregnant women and their babies. He said to take them if I thought that me being itchy and bunged up would be worse for the baby than any potential effects of any drug - I very quickly told him I would rather suffer just in case!

Basically he couldn't, and wouldn't tell me 'no you can't do that' because ultimately it's up to me. His advice was very clear though - stay away. The only thing he did say was that eye drops possibly wouldn't be as bad a tablets or nasal sprays as they are less likely to be ingested and passed on to the baby

I've never had hayfever before but my nose has been extremly itchy the past few days. Is this a sign of hayfever or just a cold coming? Doesn't feel like a cold though!

i asked the same question to my midwife and she said cannot take anything just have to suffer am afraid, am not looking forward to this.

This is a nightmare there is so much conflicting advice, when I went to my docs regarding my pregnancy last week he said mine were fine to take :eh:

i know researched the internet and theres a few that the nhs website says are safe i'll ask midwife on 19th

My doctor told me i could take my nasal sprays and to start using it straight away before the hayfever kicks in. Now i am worried.

Sounds like no-one really knows! I'm just gonna grin and bear it I think. On top of the backache, muscle pain, high blood pressure, insomnia and being kicked to within an inch of my life hay fever will be a breeze lol!!

I think it is really difficult to answer and there are a few factors affecting what GP's will advise! Firstly they all have their own opinions about any medication in the first trimester! Some even say no paracetamol  Then they use their BNF, or MIMMS to see what classification the drug has ie how tested it is. A lot of these drugs will have the 'it's not been tested but no significant risks have been raised' so it's then up to the GP's own opinion. Some are safer than others and some are known not to be safe at all. Also the method of delivery affects the risk factor. If it's a nasal spray or eye drops then it's more likely to medicate the soft tissues in the nose or eyes and the amount of the drug that actually enters the blood is very little whereas if it's a tablet a greater amount enters the blood. And finally the GP will weigh up the risk any drug carries and the risk of not taking it on you and the babies health. Since hayfever is more distressing for us, it probably doesn't have any impact on bubs so our suffering (in majority of cases) will be a better risk to take than taking medication, whereas if you had extremely high blood pressure, or epilepsy then you may have to take some drugs that carry a risk but the risk to you and baby is greater if you don't take them.
That still doesn't answer the question! I have perrenial rhinitus (basically hayfever symptoms all year round) and use a nasal spray which is one with a very low risk but again not fully tested. I've been trying to keep use to a minimum because of that. Hope this helps!

my midwife said basically "be it on your own head" lol but nose sprays n eye drops are a lot better than tablets, im sufferin quite badly at the mo 'specially with the change in weather, but im not going to give in, i will only use them until bumps here, im not gona risk anything for my little 'en

x

We sell something at boots called Haymax which is a balm that goes under your nose and is supposed to catch pollen etc. Not sure if it's actually any good, and whether sticking Vaseline under your nose would do the same sort of thing! Might help with fairly mild hayfever.

yeah I get very bad hayfever I dont mind the itchy nose its my eyes they go that swollen that I cant open them sometimes!!! I used to take loratadine but I havent to take them so I will go with the vasline on the nose that kinda helps xx
