Hi Mums,

Now i know im only JUST overdue so im not panicing just yet, but i was just wondering whether anyone had an induction and still gave birth using only gas and air? I get the impresssion that having an induction isnt good?

Meeeeeee! OK so I was whinging for an epidural for hours, the guy couldn't site it after an hour (which caused all sorts of other cock ups but we won't go there) and I did it on just G&A. I was dead set against diamorphine and stuck to my guns on that though it was offered (repeatedly  ) as an option.

The bottom line is, if I can do it on just G&A then anyone can  If you want me to go into any more detail about how it felt, ask, but I wouldn't worry as odds are you'll go into labour naturally anyway.

I had an induction and just had gas and air. I was really worried about being induced but everything went well. I was given a tablet, started contracting after 2 hours, had dilated to 4cm, had my waters artificially broken and within 20 mins went to fully dilated and began to push. i was too far gone too quickly to be able to have an epidural (which was what i wanted)

Good luck with the birth and hopefully you'll go into labour naturally.

Also... my sister gave birth yesterday (she was due to be induced today and had NO signs whatsoever so it CAN happen!)

Not quite what you asked but thought it might be helpful

Ive been induced twice, the first time I progressed far more quickly than anticipated therefore the pethadine that had just been adminstered didnt have time to work before DS popped out (although it affected him quite badly)

second time I had pethadine and before/after it wore off I asked for an epidural, they refused me any more painrelief as they didnt have the staff for an epi  and it was too late for more pethadine. Thinking about it now Im furious they left me with nothing during the later stages of labour but you know what... I bloody did it

So i count the first labour as no pain relief and the second as no pain relief during the later stages of labour

both times G&A made me :puke: and feel drunk (not good for me). I tried to be open to it but it was a horrid feeling for me, I too didnt want pethadine the second time round but it was my only option just wish I had waited a bit longer for it in hind sight.

I actually wanted to be induced the second time as spontaneous labour actually scared me Im a control freak and liked the idea of knowing when I would be in labour

Me! The drugs brought on my contractions very quickly and by the time it felt bad enough to ask for something stronger than G&A it was too late for pethidine. Even though the contractions were suddenly very intense I found the G&A really took the edge off and kept me calm and able to focus on my slow breathing technique (which in turn helped with the pain).

Hope you go into labour naturally soon! :)

I did but it wasnt my first baby (not sure if that made a difference) they inserted my pessary and i went and got in the bath, by the time i got in i was in so much pain i had to get out again and asked to be taken to delivery, they refused and said take 2 paracetamol  i told them to get stuffed and give me gas and air NOW!! by the time i got to the bed to be examined i was 7cm so they took me to delivery and by the time i got on the bed she was out, it was very quick, her actualy delivery was under a minute. :D

Thank you ladies. I had my sweep today but they arent hopeful as the cervix is posterior and doesnt look like its ready to go! They have booked me an induction for 1 December and gave me a leaflet about it. I dont like the sound of it as it goes on about epidurals and that 1 in 3 will end up having a c section! Thats high odds!

So much for my Hypnobirthing book and CD making me want a lovely natural birth. :wall:

im finding all this 'have a c-section' thing very alarming

TBH im not too fussed if it comes to it but would prefer to have a vaginal birth if possible. What concerns me a little is the hospital im going to has a high rate of C sections and has been told to promote a more natural approach. However when i mentioned the induction they seemed pretty sure i would need an epidural.. you ladies have proved that isnt the case though.

Im quite a stubburn one so wont be afraid to put up a fight but will i be arsed once im in labour?

I was induced and just wanted to have g&a, it didnt go to plan (long labour & very slow dillation) therefore I ended up having an epidural... I dont think there is anyway that you can plan what pain relief you will have as you just dont know what will happen once your there, go in open minded as im sure your body will take the lead.

No matter what pain relief you have i'm certain you'll be fine & I promise you that it will be worth it :D

Remember that you don't HAVE to be induced nori, its your choice. If you'd like to go into labour naturally, then you can refuse or delay induction.

I was given an induction date when I was 7 days overdue for 14 days overdue. I was to go into hospital daily from 12 days until induction date for monitoring of the baby (due to risk of placenta decline).

I went into labour and gave birth at 9 days over, but as I was so so pro natural birth and had planned a home birth, I think I would have tried to push them to 17 days (after the weekend, so the Monday).

I survived to 10cm on G&A only - but it was painful! I also had a birth plan of a lovely water birth - but after my waters broke and nothing happened for 48 hours I had no option but to be induced.

I would say the pain is very intense - but as all the ladies on here can testify to - it can be done. I really wanted to try and stay mobile and not flat on my back so I could try and push effectively - so I refused an epidural (apparently!) when offered one (god knows why!). However after an hour of pushing nothing happened as she was presenting face first - they tried forceps - the cord prolapsed and was therefore an emergency section.

What I would say is - go with the flow - at the time the forceps and c section was required - as much as I didn't want an assisted birth there was nothing I could do to change it - and at the time you really don't care either - you just want your baby delivered (and the pain to stop!).

Keep an open mind - if you do end up with a section - you won't mind too much believe me - you'll be so happy with your little one any regrets about the birth will be forgotten!

Good Luck !!!!

i had an induction although i was already 2 cm gone , but i did it with no pain releif not even gas and air cos its horrid lmao the only bad thing was i went from zero contractions to 3 mins apart striaght off but first contraction 8pm he was norn 12.31 am so not long at all !

i was induced, i had a pessary at 8pm and started having contractions at 10.30pm, these went on and on (they thought they were pessary pains) they gave me 2 paracetamol, examined me at about 3.00am where i was 9cm dilated  i was then took to delivery suite and had summer at 4.10am, i had gas and air for the last 30mins and for the stitches (i had forceps)

yeh it hurts but at the end of it you will have your baby, trust me you will forget it in seconds xx

Just wanted to say I was induced with my first and I had an epidural because the thought of gas and air scared me and diamorphine made me really sick. I ended up with a c section for failure to progress past 4 cm.

My second I went for a VBAC and again had to be induced at 11 days overdue. I had prostin and contracted after a few hours which went on for most of the night, had no pain relief for this. Then I was given a really good sweep and was found to be 2cm and they broke my waters. They waited until I was established before giving me gas and air and I got to 4cm on this before opting for more diamorphine. They then gave me the drip to speed things up (which can be very painful) and I carried on with gas and air until she was born. I pushed with nothing because they took it off me (damn them!) and she was born after 17 mins pushing. If you find you cannot cope with just gas and air then you can have something else to take the edge off. I'd try as hard as possible not to opt for the epidural or other drugs unless you're quite well established or it can slow it all down! I was going really well on gas and air until I had diamorphine and it stopped me at 4cm for a while until they kicked it all off again with the drip. I think this could have been the reason for my first being delivered by c section and they kept messing with the drip saying the baby wasn't coping when in fact he was doing fine according to my consultant when I had my daughter.
