Handing in notice at work

Brian handed in hs notice today giving one weeks notice.
Can his boss make him leave today?
If he can does he need to be paid?

It all depends what his contract says. If his boss makes him leave today and his contract says he must give one week's notice then he will be paid for that week. If it says one months notice he will be paid for that month. If they have sneakily put in that they don't have to give notice (I'm sure I've heard of this but I doubt it is common) then he won't get paid.
