Hair dyeing?

Hi everyone,

Just wondered what everyone's thoughts / experiences were regarding hair dyeing in pregnancy? I asked my midwife at my Booking in appointment and she said there is no conclusive evidence that dye can harm the baby, but best to wait until at least 12 weeks to be extra safe.

I really am getting quite desperate and don't think I can wait another three weeks until I reach the 12 week mark! I have grey roots about 1.5 inches long and feel awful... but at the same time I don't want to do anything that might harm baby.

Does anyone know of any dyes that are less harmful than others? Are any of you having the same problem as me?

The only thing I know is that it may not come out the colour you expect, something to do with hormones I think

i heard its best to wait til after 12 weeks or id be doing mine now lol. worst thing is i got a festival to go to in a month and so cant dye til after that and my hair is half black half pink, the pink is slowly coming out and the black has a grey line at the bottom of it lol. desperately needs doing

Yeah I heard that too - but I think any colour has got to be better than grey roots! They're hideous!

Aww, Bev G, I feel your pain! It's our 8th wedding anniversary in two weeks and we have some nice things planned - but I am just feeling like crap! I daren't even have my hair cut as the longer curls are kind of disguising the grey a little, but if I have it cut short the grey will all be exposed. It's not even grey all over - but in patches. Not nice!

Hope you enjoy the festival - you could always wear a hat if things get really bad - it's something I've started considering... Good luck!

I coloured my hair the day of my 12 week scan, and was then put back so i was about 10-11weeks. It was fine colour took ok and don't believe there was any damage to LO

im thinking maybe just do the black as its on top, long as i dont have to bleach t again should be fine

That's reassuring pinkyprincess - do you know if some dyes are less harmful than others?

I've been told if the hair dresser uses foils the dye does not touch the hair so that is safe. But maybe leave off the bleach to be on the safe side.

I'm leaving mine till TRI 2 just in case.

I usually do mine at home myself - but maybe this time might let the hairdresser do it properly to avoid the scalp!

I used a semi permanent one at 9 weeks. With general early pregnancy issues and obvious grey roots I had to do something to perk me up. Its starting to fade already but by time it looks bad again i'll be over 12wk.

I read that it would be ok. Even highlights are ok cos they dont touch the scalp.

Try wash in wash out dye ... They should be ok

Yea i've read everywhere that it'll be fine-and that it just might not take because of the hormones that you're producing it can stop you achieving your desired colour. I don't see anything wrong with it. My mum said to me last night that i couldn't/shouldn't but i think the chemicals in des have probably changed over the years to make it safer.

Erm a semi perm maybe? Not 100% sure tho!

Apparently there's no problem with the chemicals harming the baby, the only issue is the colour being altered by pregnancy hormones. So my MW says.

All foils are fine, even bleach, it doesn't touch scalp, when washing off bleach isn't working anymore so you don't need to worry about that. Most hair dressers won't put full head colour on pregnant woman till after 12 weeks unless foils. X

I dyed my hair at 10 weeks 5 days I think it was I had my scan the next day and baby was fine!
My baby is full of energy, kicking away as we speak. I've dyed my hair twice now xxx

I was told ok and hairdresser said ok so I went for it with foils. It's totally up to you hun. I know how hard it is to make a decision because I ummed and arred over it too!

i am in the same position as you, some people hae told me not to dye my hair but my hairdresser has told me it is perfectly fine to dye your hair any time during pregnancy. I still dont know what to do yet x

I was told by hairdresser that dye is ok but they don't recommend bleach in early pregnancy.
