Just found out I am a carrier of this and the dr has told me to come in and pick up a prescription for anti-biotics. Has anyone else had it?

I know a couple of the girls on here did have it. Think they have their l/o's already. I think it's very easily controlable but they give antibiotics for the pregnancy and labour too x

It's certainly something worth getting screened for. That way they'll know if they need to give your baby antibiotics after birth to ensure the baby doesn't develop it.

I was screened last week and it came back positive, reading up on it, it seems from 25-45% of women are carriers and it has no side effects. I guess it's just one of those things like some people have herpes and some don't.
Hopefully the dr will throw some light on it tomorrow. I just got the secretary today.

A friend was a carrier at the time of having two of her children. They didn't screen for it and both babies were were unwell.

It's a harmless infection for mums (most women carry the bacteria at some point) and it only causes a problem if the infection is there at the time of labour, prob why you have anti biotics now!

Hi Binzy,
I had this when I was pregnant with my son, 2 1/2 yrs ago.
I wasnt given any anti-biotics on prescription or whilst pregnant but I did during labour.
My waters broke at 37 wks - probably due to the strep B.
I had to be induced to get the baby out quick as pos - as no protection once water has broke.
I had anti-biotics given to me on a drip.
Unfortunately my son did contract the infection and was very very poorly when first born and went to SCBU.
I had to stay in hospital for 4 days after he was born, as he had to have regular anti biotics through a drip.
Babies do die from this so dont be fobbed off that it isnt serious - but most are ok and i know i was really lucky as he is a very healythy little boy now.
Find out as much as pos about it - they were very blase with me and said oh its very common blah blah - I only realised how serious it was when my son contracted it.
praying it has gone away for this pregnancy!!
Good luck!!
Any questions you have please pm me.
Hugs xxxxxx

I had it with my daughter, had to have a course of antibiotics at around 37 weeks and an IV drip put in as soon as I went to hosp in labour. No adverse effects to baby at all, everything was fine. But apparently this time around I won't get antibiotics or IV, they'll just monitor baby, which is odd, but hey ho. Hope it's all fine for you honey xxx

Hi hunni i did a test for this at my booking in app and got a call and letter to say i had an infection (they didnt specify what kind, ie Strep B or just UTI) but they gave me some anti biotics anyway

Its a good thing they picked up on it, they'll make sure bubs is safe xxx

Thanks for all your advice. I have a six day course of antibiotics to take and my gyno wasn't at the surgery when I picked up the prescription so I have emailed him for more info. Way TMI but I don't have the virus in my vagina but in my rectum, not sure if this changes things but if I don't get an answer to my email by tomorrow I shall be calling back.
Thanks for sharing ladies. Xx

Hi Binzy, just wondered how you got tested for it? I know that screening for strep B is not an NHS norm. I want to get tested too so I'm just wondering what tests to ask for?

Hey Ninja and Sassy know its not my thread but when i had my booking in at 14 weeks my mw asked me to do a water sample specifically to test for Strep B xx

I live in Italy and it's standard procedure to test for this around 35 weeks.
TMI again but I had vaginal and rectal swabs taken, sounds much worse than it actually was.
It was over in a few seconds. My dr said I need this done again once I have finished the course of anti biotics to make sure it's all cleared up. Fingers crossed. He was confident that the antibiotics will solve the problem.

So, I've finished my course of antibiotics and have to have more swabs tomorrow to see if the virus has cleared up. Fingers crossed ladies!
